Let’s talk about something most of us love to ignore - REST.
🙋♀️ Don’t worry - I’m guilty of this too.
When we attach our self-worth to our productivity, we start to worship (and prioritise) the grind. Then we keep pushing until something snaps… and often, it’s our adrenals taking the hit.
Our adrenal glands (which sit like little hats on top of our kidneys) work flat out to produce hormones that help us control stress, metabolism, blood pressure, and immune response.
But when we push ourselves into overdrive, and bully these poor little glands into keeping us going, they’re eventually going to start waving the white flag of burnout.
I know mine are in the bunker ripping up sheets and tying them to sticks right now.
When we ignore the signs of fatigue and keep pushing, here’s what happens:
🪫 Exhaustion that even a month of sleep can’t fix.
🪫Brain fog that has us forgetting what day it is.
🪫Cravings for sugar, salt, and caffeine just to keep going.
🪫Feeling like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster.
🪫Weakened immune system (which makes you a walking invitation for every bug in town).
If we keep pushing past these signals, we’re setting ourselves up for long-term impacts:
⚠️ Chronic stress that disrupts every part of our health. And I mean EVERY part!
⚠️ Anxiety and depression becoming more frequent visitors. Not always - but our thinking heads more for catastrophe than calm.
⚠️ Weight gain that’s harder and harder to shake because, let’s face it - you’re too F*CKING EXHAUSTED to chop veggies or head out for a walk.
⚠️ Digestive issues (yep, your stomach’s feeling it too).
⚠️ An overall drop in resilience, motivation, and patience. Don’t we know it!!
So let’s cut the crap and start staring down how we’re our own worst enemy at times. It’s not the workplace, your business, your kids or other people’s demands that are the problem, it’s our lack of boundaries that makes them one.
If you’re not valuing yourself, you’re teaching other people not to value you either.
So, let’s make a pact.
Instead of treating rest like it’s a luxury or something we need to earn, let’s make it a priority.
Recharge before you need to - so you don’t have to try and rebuild from burnout later.
Your adrenal glands will thank you.
So will your sleep, your metabolism, your bowels, your mojo, your brain, your overall health, your self-worth and your joy.
Here’s how I’m doing it.
I have gone into my calendar and have blocked out 12pm - 2pm every day so I can work in the background of my business - catch-up on stuff and lessen the pace. It’s not gonna happen every day, as I run a fair bit of training - but even if it pans out twice a week it’s still going to make a difference.
What small step are you prepared to take consistently to stop your health and your emotions pulling rank on you?
