The NHAA welcomed the announcement that the Australian Government not only accepted recommendations to reinstate private health insurance (PHI) rebates for naturopathy and Western Herbal medicine, but have now changed the legislative rules to allow this to happen. This means that effective 1 July, 2025, private health insurance funds can now once again include naturopathy and Western herbal medicine in their packages. The Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA) has been a strong voice in defending the value of natural therapies. By upholding high professional standards, strict education requirements, and a commitment to evidence-based practice, ANTA has helped restore credibility to the field.

Thanks to ANTA’s consistent advocacy, many private health insurers are once again recognizing naturopaths registered with ANTA. Over 50 health funds now acknowledge ANTA-accredited naturopaths, improving access to rebates and coverage options for patients across the country.

Nourished's Naturopathic services give you the tools and knowledge to take control of your own health, rather than giving you a quick fix. While we can simply relieve problematic symptoms, the cause will also be addressed.

We use an integrative, science-based healthcare approach. Functional medicine looks “upstream” to consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.

Functional medicine uses “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations botanical/herbal medicines, nutritional supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques.

These dyes, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1, and others, are derived from petrochemicals and have been linked to hyperactivity, attention deficits, behavioral disturbances, and potential neurotoxicity, especially in children.
Multiple peer-reviewed studies and meta-analyses have shown that these additives can alter neurotransmitter activity and may disrupt the gut-brain axis. Still, they’ve been widely used in the U.S. food system, with little to no warning to consumers.
Meanwhile, countries like the U.K. and the EU have either banned or require warning labels on these very same dyes. For too long, American families have been left in the dark.

After more than 30 years of sounding the alarm, we’re finally seeing change.

The FDA will begin phasing out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from our food supply.

This announcement from the FDA is a powerful shift in the right direction. It shows what’s possible when doctors, researchers, parents, and advocates speak up and refuse to settle for a food system that prioritizes profit over public health.

To everyone who’s been part of this fight: thank you.
This is a win for science. A win for common sense. And most importantly, a win for our kids.

We’re not done, but today, we celebrate.

There is a huge problem in modern medicine. This is the over-reliance on proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for the management of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GORD). Such drugs were never intended for long-term use and the chronic suppression of gastric acid they induce is linked to increased risk of pneumonia, osteoporosis, micronutrient malabsorption, some cancers, gut bacterial overgrowth, oesophageal candidiasis and food allergy, to name a few. GORD can be a mild condition, so given these side effects, the risk of long-term treatment often outweighs any benefit. There is a clear need for clinically proven alternatives to PPIs, but to date there have been only a few clinical trials of herbal options. In this context, a recent trial of a deglycyrrhizinised licorice root extract (DGL) is a welcome addition.

This was a large, 28-day, double blind, parallel group, randomised, placebo-controlled trial (n = 200) with participants randomised in a 1:1 ratio to either the placebo or DGL group. Primary outcome measures studied were the changes in the Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease-Health-Related Quality of Life and the Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease Symptom Assessment Scale.

The DGL group reported a significantly better quality of life at the end of the intervention period (p = 0.014). They also reported earlier resolution of symptoms of GORD compared to the placebo group, especially symptoms of heartburn (p = 0.017 on day 14 and p = 0.005 on day 28) and regurgitation (p = 0.025 on day 7, p = 0.029 on day 14, and p = 0.022 on day 28).

The DGL used in the study was a flavonoid-rich licorice root extract standardised to glabridin (≥3.5% w/w) with glycyrrhizin (≤3.0% w/w). The dose was 75 mg twice a day after meals. I use substantially higher doses of this particular DGL in my clinical practice.

Papaya is one of the most over looked fruit in my opinion.
It is a delicious tropical fruit, and it is a rich source of nutrients. In fact, among all commercial fruit, papaya has one of the most impressive nutrition profiles. It is packed with nutrients that aid in healthy digestion, boosting immunity and heart health.
