Why nature is the ideal sensory room 🌿 🧠
Nature is multi-sensory, supporting regulation, cognitive development and emotional well-being.
Sensory systems:
Outdoor environments can stimulate all sensory systems, providing full-spectrum sensory input. This sensory integration helps children organise and regulate their nervous system.
Regulating:
Natural environments can be up-regulating, meaning it stimulates and energises which can foster mental clarity, creativity and alertness. Nature can also be down-regulating for our nervous systems, providing less demanding sensory input that lowers stress hormones. Helping our bodies shift from a high-arousal and stress-driven state to a calm and restorative state. This can be provided by inputs that are for example gentle and repetitive, which can help to support emotional regulation, attention, and participation.
Functional:
Activities in nature can be purposeful and meaningful, translating directly to daily life.
Some examples are…
Climbing a tree can build strength, planning, confidence.
Walking on uneven ground uses balance and coordination.
Heavy work tasks such as carrying sticks or moving buckets is a great opportunity for proprioceptive input.
Accessibility:
Nature spaces are accessible and sustainable, available almost anywhere (parks, beaches, backyards).
Being outside naturally creates opportunities for rich, varied, and meaningful sensory experiences!
