Cailin’s Feelings Forest 😊
We are very proud to officially introduce Cailin, our talented local artist, to our community.

You may have already seen some of Cailin’s beautiful artwork around the farm for example, our animals’ name signs, the Goat Café window, and several other projects such as the “I Wonder…” storybook from 2024 and her “From the Ground Up Wellbeing Farm – Activity Book,” which is currently available in our farm stall.

Cailin’s latest project has been a creative reimagining of the original Feeling Forest faces in our Sensory Garden. With her experience using the 4 Zones of Regulation, she has expanded on the concept, creating her own version that reflects more of a spectrum of emotions.

Cailin is not only incredibly talented artistically, but she also has a unique ability to add layers of depth and meaning to her work. Everything she creates is intentional.

We would love to take this opportunity to share with our community the thought and detail she has put into this project.
Cailin’s Feelings Forest:
The faces are inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine’s 1980s–1990s model train era.
She has expanded on the four colours used in the Zones of Regulation, combining them to create additional colours and associated emotions. She has also incorporated patterns on the sides, reflecting the energy of each emotion, along with subtle social and cultural references.
Red: Anger – arrows
Orange: Embarrassment – arrows and lightning bolts
Yellow: Fear – lightning bolts to symbolise high energy
Green: Happiness – upward green arrows
Chartreuse (light green): Calm – wave patterns inspired by “Maui”-like designs
Teal/Cyan: Boredom – a simple pattern of teardrops and waves, with a subtle nod to Indigenous patterning (small circles for walking, larger circles for waterholes)
Blue: Sadness – teardrop patterns
Purple: Disgust – a complex argyle diamond pattern (red/anger + blue/water = crystals)
Grey: Apathy – simple stripes representing neutrality, combining the purity of white and the security of black

We would love for our community to take the time to visit Cailin’s Feeling Forest faces in the Sensory Garden, near the Lakehouse, and experience them in person.

Even more so, we would love your support in celebrating Cailin’s talent and dedication by purchasing one of her creative and engaging activity books, based on our farm and the animals we all adore.

Why nature is the ideal sensory room 🌿 🧠

Nature is multi-sensory, supporting regulation, cognitive development and emotional well-being.

Sensory systems:
Outdoor environments can stimulate all sensory systems, providing full-spectrum sensory input. This sensory integration helps children organise and regulate their nervous system.

Regulating:
Natural environments can be up-regulating, meaning it stimulates and energises which can foster mental clarity, creativity and alertness. Nature can also be down-regulating for our nervous systems, providing less demanding sensory input that lowers stress hormones. Helping our bodies shift from a high-arousal and stress-driven state to a calm and restorative state. This can be provided by inputs that are for example gentle and repetitive, which can help to support emotional regulation, attention, and participation.

Functional:
Activities in nature can be purposeful and meaningful, translating directly to daily life.
Some examples are…
Climbing a tree can build strength, planning, confidence.
Walking on uneven ground uses balance and coordination.
Heavy work tasks such as carrying sticks or moving buckets is a great opportunity for proprioceptive input.

Accessibility:
Nature spaces are accessible and sustainable, available almost anywhere (parks, beaches, backyards).

Being outside naturally creates opportunities for rich, varied, and meaningful sensory experiences!

When Natural Disasters Happen — Here Are Ways to Support Your Wellbeing ☔️

With the flooding currently impacting parts of our community, many children, families, and individuals may be feeling increased anxiety, uncertainty, and stress. Natural disasters can be overwhelming, particularly for neurodivergent individuals and those who rely on routine and predictability. Here are some strategies that may help support wellbeing during this time.

If you or someone you support is finding things particularly overwhelming, it may help to reach out to your support team or a trusted professional.

We are thinking of everyone in our community affected by the flooding, please stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other.
