Top Tip: Stay hydrated!

You've probably heard this a million times from a million different people, make sure you are having enough water. But unfortunately its estimated that a whopping 80% of Australians are not properly hydrated 😲😲 So what are the signs of insufficient hydration?

There are a few symptoms that you can look for. Dehydration impairs your cognitive function, meaning your memory and your mood are impaired. That brain fog you get could be a sign you need more water, not just your morning coffee!

It also affects you physically, causing headaches, affecting joint lubrication, and causing unhealthy skin. Improper hydration negatively affects digestion as well, causing things like constipation and kidney stones.

All these symptoms can be the result of poor hydration, so make sure to keep your emotional support water bottle on hand at all times!

GP FAQ: Why does my doctor need me to do a health assessment when I come for my drivers licence certificate?

Unfortunately when we age, we tend to lose a lot of our independence. It can feel insulting to have to complete a whole assessment for a certificate that lets you drive, especially when you've been driving just fine for the last 50+ years. So why do we ask that you do one?

The biggest reason we ask you to do this is because it is a completely free, comprehensive assessment that takes a look at all areas of your health. We at Grace Medical Skin & Vein Centre believe that the best way to keep your independence is to look after your health. This assessment makes sure we cover all areas of your health, so nothing slips through the cracks.

But why do we do it in conjunction with your drivers licence certificate? There are two main reasons. The first is cost. This assessment is 100% funded by the Queensland Government, so doing them both together guarantees there will be no cost to your appointment.

The other reason is so we can make sure that you are healthy as well as fit to drive. The only thing this drivers licence certificate requires is an eyesight test. We want to make sure there are no other underlying problems missed because we have only done the bare minimum to pass. The better your health, the longer you can keep going with those Sunday drives!

Top Tip: Get your flu vaccination!

It's coming up to the two weeks of winter in Bundaberg, and we all know what the colder months bring. Coughs, sneezes and sore throats. Last year, there were over 500,000 confirmed cases of the flu, and nobody wants to be one of those cases. So how do we prevent it?

The answer is simple. Get your flu vaccination. They are not live vaccines, so they cannot infect you with the flu. Supplement this with proper hand hygiene and protective gear like a face mask (covid flashbacks anyone?).

The only way to make sure you and your family are safe from the flu is to protect yourselves, and the best way to do this is the flu vaccine.

GP FAQ: Why doesn't my call go through to my clinic between 1pm and 2pm?

It's happened to all of us at one point. We go for our lunchbreak and decide to make an appointment you've been putting off. But instead you get an automated message saying we are closed and to call back. It's frustrating, but there is valid reasoning behind it.

Obviously we go for lunch between those hours. We all need to eat, and unfortunately healthcare providers are no different. But another reason is so that we can catch-up.
It gives our admin staff the chance to check emails, send reports, and generally get back on track so the afternoon can run smoothly.
It gives our nursing staff the chance to clean, and ensure that they can see to any remaining patients without the worry of an interruption.
It also gives our doctors the chance to check for results, finish notes, and do anything they may not have had time to do during consultations.

Top Tip: Ask your hairdresser if there are any changes to your scalp.

When it comes to sun safety, one of the areas we often forget is the top of our heads. But even though your hair covers your scalp visibly, the UV rays that cause skin cancer do make it through to your scalp. Even if you wear a hat you may not be protected, as your standard baseball hats my provide as little as SPF 5.

So next time you visit your hairdresser, ask them if they notice any spots or discolouration to your scalp. It is much better to be safe rather than sorry.

GP FAQ: Do I need a follow-up appointment with my doctor if I feel better?

So you have been to your GP and they've asked you to book a follow up. But when it comes to the day of the appointment, you feel better. Should you still come, or should you cancel so someone else can get an appointment?

Your doctor may ask you to book a follow up for a number of reasons. Some examples are getting your test results, checking if your symptoms have improved, if the treatment is working, the list goes on. This unfortunately means that the question of whether or not to keep your appointment has no simple answer.

An easy thing you can do to figure out what is best for you, is give us a ring. Our friendly reception staff will be able to help figure out the best course of action.

Top Tip: Wear clothing that will help to prevent UV skin damage.
We all know the saying Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide, but why should we wear protective clothing on a cloudy day, or worse, when it's hot?
While sunscreen can wash or rub off, your clothing provides a reliable protective buffer between your skin and the UV rays that cause skin cancer. However, you still need to be mindful of what clothes you wear out in the sun, as your average tee-shirt only blocks 5% of the harmful UV rays.
A good test you can do at home is to hold an item of clothing up to a light. If light shines through, then UV rays can get through. You can also buy clothing that is specially designed to block UV Rays, labelled UPF 50+.

GP FAQ: Why do I have to fill out forms all the time?

Here at Grace Medical Skin & Vein Centre, we ask nearly all of our patients to fill in forms when they arrive. While this may seem like a needless waste of paper, we do have our reasons for getting your autograph all the time.

There are two main types of forms we require. The first type ask for information, here are some examples. When you have your first appointment with us, you will get a three page form asking for your details, or when you have a Health Assessment, we need up to date information. We do this to ensure we give you the best care for your specific situation.

The second type of forms we have ask for your consent. Some examples include skin check consent forms, procedure consent forms, and vein treatment consent forms. We ask for your consent because we want to make sure you are aware of what treatment you are receiving, and to make sure there are no surprises for either you, nor your treatment team.
