Our amazing FSPH Oncology Team had a fantastic time at this year’s Relay for Life. It was a day full of heart as we supported, celebrated and remembered the incredible patients who inspire us every day.

To top it all off, we were honoured to receive the Spirit of Relay – Team trophy. A lovely and humbling surprise that capped off an already beautiful day.

Thank you to everyone who came together to make it so special.

FAKE NEWS – STRAHAN – BUNDABERG TODAY – FRIDAY 18TH JULY 2025

The Bundaberg Today published an article on Friday, 18th July 2025, based upon comments by Strahan, who, it should be noted, has not been accredited to practice at the Friendly’s since February 2024. The article also fails to highlight that Strahan operates a business that is in competition with the Friendly’s.

The article contained disinformation – which appears designed to mislead our community and reflect poorly upon the reputation of the Friendly’s and its team of dedicated staff and VMO’s. Strahan’s tone and content in the article reflects behaviour that is strongly condoned by the AMA and Specialist Medical Colleges in Australia.

I can confirm that my Board welcomes contemporary advice from highly respected accredited medical practitioners at the Friendly’s.

The Bundaberg Friendly Society Private Hospital is proud that in the past 27 years we have had three CEO’s leading our organisation.

The commitment from my team resulted in a positive financial result for the 2024 – 2025 financial year. This achievement in spite of the challenges facing Private Health in Australia was possible with their commitment and hard work in leading and managing health care delivery to our community but importantly changing work practices in line with the changes in our external environment, one of which has been better management of medical patients.

In 2022-2023 the Friendly’s did endure a financial loss, after taking in to account interest and depreciation expenses, as did many private and public health providers, known as the COVID effect and successfully traded out of this in 2023-2024 reversing a $4.8M deficit with a break even result. Our cash and balance sheet position remained and remains sound.

Given the Friendly’s recent financial results and the strategic operational adjustments, the Board and I are confident that the Friendly’s will remain the pre-eminent private hospital in Bundaberg. We have a long history of providing quality safe care in our community and we will continue to do so with the support of our staff, VMO’s and Community overseen by prudent fiscal and clinical governance management.

It should also be noted that the Medical Specialist Chairing the Medical Advisory Committee is an independent participant in the Bundaberg Friendly Society Medical Institute Board.

In relation to the recent accreditation process all private and public hospitals in Australia receive a short notice assessment during a three-year accreditation cycle. The recommendations post the short notice assessment are a customary part of the accreditation process that will be finalised in late August with an accreditation report issued in September. The Board and I are very pleased with the progress made in addressing the recommendations received and anticipate ongoing accreditation.

The Bundaberg Today reporter did not wait for our response to the allegation that the Emergency Department is to close. Our response to this is that the Emergency Department continues to provide emergent care to our community.

Unit 5 at the Friendly’s has closed due to the expiry of our Service Agreement with WBHHS. Consumers receiving care under the collaborative care service agreement consistently rated our services 98% satisfaction. At the expiry of the service agreement The Friendly’s provided three submissions to WBHHS all of which were rejected without sound reason. Our concerns for the community regarding this were escalated to the Acting Director General, QLD Health and Local Parliamentary Members and I will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of the Bundaberg and Wide Bay Community to recommission our 27 empty beds.

Finally, The Friendly’s CEO resides in Bundaberg and can be spotted regularly enjoying a local coffee at Favours.

This NAIDOC Week (6–13 July), we proudly celebrate 50 years of honouring the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”, pays tribute to the enduring strength of our Elders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy carried forward by our youth.

At The Friendlies, we are committed to walking alongside First Nations peoples—listening, learning, and working together towards a healthier, more inclusive future.
