Did you know that most of us swallow 500-700 times a day?
Today is Swallowing Awareness Day and we are shining the light on Dysphagia (medical term for swallowing difficulties) and helping recognise people who experience swallowing difficulties and the role of speech pathologists! At BSPC, we can offer support to adults with swallowing difficulties in the clinic and hospital setting

Dysphagia. What is that?

Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulty – something most of us do without thinking, 500 to 700 times a day. We swallow during sleep, throughout the day, and even more during meals.

On 19 March, Swallowing Awareness Day shines a light on people with swallowing needs and the role of speech pathologists who help them eat, drink, and live safely.

Help us to raise awareness about dysphagia. Download the digital kit on our website and share across your networks. 👉 https://bit.ly/3XMSegz

Today is R U OK Day, and at Speech Pathology Australia, we're here to remind you that communication is key to mental health! Let's recognise the importance of checking in on one another and starting meaningful conversations. Every word matters, and every conversation can make a difference. As speech pathologists, we know that communication difficulties can affect mental well-being. So, on this R U OK Day, take a moment to ask someone, "Are you okay?" Your words can change a life. Let's keep the conversation going, today and every day.

Today is Swallowing Awareness Day! As speech pathologists, we work closely with children and adults who experience dysphagia. We can recommend modified diets, thickened fluids, and safe-swallow strategies!

What’s this thing called Dysphagia?
Dysphagia (dis-fay-juh) is difficulty swallowing, and today (16 March) is Swallowing Awareness Day. The theme for the day in 2023 is, “Dysphagia: A difficult diagnosis to swallow”.
People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children with difficulty feeding my not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development.
Speech pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. Everyday speech pathologists work with families and individuals across the lifespan to ease the burden of dysphagia.
On Swallowing Awareness Day, 16 March, help us spread the word about dysphagia. We have a range of materials to learn more about dysphagia.

Happy International Women’s Day💓

On International Women’s Day (8 March), with 13,202 female members and 50 female staff, Speech Pathology Australia and the speech pathology profession in Australia have never been in better hands.

In 2023, the theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’. This theme is based on the United Nations 67th Commission on the Status of Women priority theme ‘Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

But we all have a responsibility for gender equality, in whatever setting.

Every day is an opportunity for all of us to join voices with family, friends, colleagues and clients, and shout the message that “Women’s rights are human rights!”
