The Chicken or the Egg..?
It has definitely been a case of the chicken before the egg at my house this week. We have two hens that haven't laid for months upon months. We recently introduced two 8-week-old chicks to the crew and an egg suddenly appeared in the nest box! We had always planned on giving the hens a peaceful retirement but maybe they weren't so sure!

With many thanks to the hen that provided, I pulled together a breakfast of free-range eggs, German rye bread (freshly baked at at The Village Grocer & Store Bundanoon), baby spinach, avocado, jalapeño hummus and sunflower seeds. This was a breakfast for my skin, with the essential fatty acids found in sunflower seeds and avocado, as well as the fat-soluble vitamins found in eggs and sunflower seeds. Thanks girls!

It’s definitely porridge weather! Oats, soy milk and stewed apples topped with hazelnuts, walnuts and buckinis. Feeding myself and my microbiome.

Porridge can be so diverse. By definitin it is meal or cereal boiled in water or milk (or time spent in prison.. and for some they may be the same thing!)

Steel cut oats, rolled oats, quick oats, semolina or even savoury. Experiment and give it a try!

Back to school promo!

Whether you are directly engaging with younger children or running a taxi service for older children during the school holidays, a common consequence is removing focus from your own health and wellbeing. To help re-engage you with your health, all initial consultations booked within the first two weeks of school term will see a 5% reduction on herbs and supplements prescribed in your initial prescription, for every child you send back to school!
Simply click on the booking link in the post pinned to the top of the page and scroll down to the ‘Initial Naturopathic Consultation – Adult – Back to school promo!’ appointment type, to book you appointment.

T&Cs
I appreciate that different schools have different term dates, so I’m happy to accept your individual school’s term dates.
Applies to all school aged children (primary and secondary).
Whether you attend the clinic during the first two weeks of school term or book during the first two weeks of the school term for a future date, the promotion will still be honoured.

Pilates by candlelight anyone?!

So, we had the extended version of the blackout at my place yesterday. I find this quite easy to navigate, as for many years as a child we lived rurally with the whole kit and kaboodle of no running water or electricity and an outside toilet. I was in fact introduced only yesterday as 'Rachel, who grew up with an outside toilet'. People tend to find this humorous, as I grew up in the 80s.

I made the most of the situation yesterday and did Pilates by candlelight, in the early hours of the morning. This was quickly followed by borrowing electricity from a friend to charge my laptop and blend my smoothie!

How did you manage the blackout? Leave a comment if you wish to share (or rant!)

Nutrition for parturition.. 10,000 BC

Beginning the switch to carbohydrate-rich diets in Agrarian societies 12,000 years ago served the primary need of Homo sapiens living at that time in our evolutionary history: they guaranteed reproduction, which expanded the human race. These carbohydrate-rich diets provided the energy requirements for reproduction, however this was at the expense of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants in the diet. Looking through this lens of evolution, do predominantly carbohydrate-rich diets still serve a purpose in modern societies? Societies who are more interested in quality of life and longevity than having numerous offspring? Yes, carbohydrates are important in the diet but they shouldn’t dominate the diet, their sources should be varied and they should be high quality.

Diet evolution of Agrarian societies

Agrarian societies started to crop food plants and domesticate animals around 12,000 years ago, in Turkey, Iran and the Levant. In these regions they cropped or domesticated wheat, goats, peas, lentils, olives, horses and grapevines. Other agrarian societies followed in Central America (maize and beans), South America (potatoes and llamas), China (rice and pigs), North America (pumpkins), New Guinea (sugar and bananas) and West Africa (African millet, African rice, sorghum and wheat). The diets of these Agrarian societies became dominated with carbohydrate-rich foods such as maize, potatoes, rice and wheat. What purpose did this serve for Homo sapiens 12,000 years ago? See you back here later in the week to find out.

Diet Evolution

The recent talk around the benefits of grains in the diet got me thinking about diet evolution. I find diet evolution fascinating and I think it’s useful to understand how aspects of our diet have evolved over time. Why do we tend towards stews and soups packed with mushrooms and bony cuts of meat in winter, or salad vegetables in summer? Why do people binge on salt, sugar and fat, when it is available (which is always)? Why do some women from Agrarian gene lines have higher oestrogen levels than women from non-agrarian gene lines? What was the purpose of humans switching to carbohydrate-rich diets thousands of years ago?
Watch this space because I will be talking diet evolution on the clinic page over the next little while.
OK, now I have 'Do the Evolution Baby' stuck in my head..

What stood out for me at the 'Changing the Script' Symposium?

I'm all for practical healthcare. Who loves tedious treatment plans and complicated diets? Not many, if any!
I really resonated with the message about the over-prescription of grain-free diets. It shouldn't be standard advice for everyone a naturopath sees in their clinic, nothing in naturopathic healthcare should be. This is individualised healthcare, right?
The impact of unnecessary grain-free diets? A diet that lacks fibre to feed gut cells, causing an ingestion of the gut lining as an alternative and the gut issues that follow. If you can't tolerate grains, the question should be why and what can be done to improve gut function? Humans have evolved with grains over thousands of years and removing them from the diet overnight or long term will have its impact.

Changing the Script

I made my way down to Melbourne last weekend, to sit in on the Activated Probiotics' Changing the Script Symposium.

I fuelled right with Free to Feed's not for profit catering, was introduced to Activated Probiotics' new range, Activated Therapeutics and most importantly emersed myself in the changing of the script.

Our understanding of human health is constantly evolving and we need to be prepared to act courageously and change the script when it no longer serves us, or the community around us.

On a recent trip, I found myself at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden. Accessible only by ropeway, the garden includes plants from all over the world. I found the Echinacea in full bloom. Most of us know Echinacea for its immune properties but it is also a valuable adaptogen, helping the body to adapt to stresses more readily.

Causes of Nutritional Deficiencies

There are generally three causes of nutritional deficiencies of any kind:
Poor intake, poor absorption or high utilisation.

Poor intake
Not eating enough foods that contain a particular nutrient or not taking the correct dose of a nutritional supplement.

Poor absorption
Poor absorption from food as a result of poor digestive health, taking a poorly absorbed form of a nutritional supplemental, or taking a supplement incorrectly.

High utilisation
The body requires more of a particular nutrient than is generally required by the average person, as a result of lifestyle or a disease process.
