🚨 Attention mental health professionals and advocates! 🚨
The Vocational Mental Health Practitioners Association of Australia (VMHPAA) has published its formal response to the Draft National Standards for Counsellors and Psychotherapists and they've got serious concerns.
Thousands of vocationally trained counsellors risk being sidelined by these proposed standards, which could limit private practice access, supervision roles, and more, despite no evidence of risk or reduced competency.
The response outlines:
⚖️ The legal, equitable, and clinical implications
💼 Real-world impact across community, NDIS, education, aged care, rural services
👩⚕️ The dangers of excluding experienced professionals—many of whom are women, mature-aged, or working in underserved areas

VMHPAA is calling for:
1. Recognition of vocational pathways
Evidence-based, fair and inclusive standards
2. Meaningful consultation with VMHPAA and vocational education sectors
Let’s stand together to ensure inclusive, workforce-relevant standards in mental health care!
