What is it for you that people just don't 'get' about ADHD?

Is it that they think that you have a 'superpower' to get things done? Or that they think you are distracted by every single bird that flies past? Or is it the emotional side of things that you wished people understood better - the rejection sensitivity or the ability to get overstimulated?

I'd love to know, what are the features that you would be looking for in an app for ADHD? What are the elements that are missing from previous apps that you feel like you need for productivity, focus or attention?

I am still building my app and would love some more feedback - sign up to wait list in on my bio.

Psychologists, Therapists and anyone who works in talk therapy - what are the books that you recommend to people new to the industry as good primers? Irvin Yalom has always been a big one for me, as well as Carl Rogers' On Becoming a Person.

How many books like this did you buy or read, trying to 'get your s**t together' before you realized that maybe you had ADHD? I always wondered why I couldn't get things to stick..

Went to the Bookfest this weekend at the Convention Centre, be sure to check it out, all of the proceeds go to their Su***de Helpline.

This is something that I see so often in clinical practice (and the literature) for people with late diagnosis of ADHD. So many people were able to 'make it through' earlier years of school (or even all the way through). But then when intensity kicks in, the executive dysfunction kicks off.

So now people are asking 'why' and what is different and because ADHD is a 'childhood thing' they miss the idea that maybe they are finally exhibiting something that has always been there, but masked by intelligence, coping skills or other supports as buffers.

What? Yep, you heard what I said - take it on an adventure with you, somewhere it doesn't usually see. Anxiety will tell you to play it safe and not do anything 'until you feel better' but the 'better' goalposts keep moving and you keep missing things.

It's OK to do things with anxiety, pack it in your bag and bring it with you! Take it for a walk, go to a movie with it, or socialise - you might even find after a while, it might get tired and go home by itself.

This is a super simplistic way of looking at it, but despite what your brain may be saying right now, you have survived every one of the days that it said you wouldn't. The key here is 'This too shall pass' - it is OK if you are feeling overwhelmed right now, but the fight with yourself and the struggle to make things feel 'right' is often the thing that makes you feel worse.

Dropping the struggle can be difficult, so the first step is to just make sure that you are engaged in your normal self care routine - whether it's meditation, exercise, hobbies or whatever else. Take your anxiety on a little adventure with you and let it experience some of those things!

I am currently offering ADHD assessments at $549. The process of getting the diagnosis process started is frustrating enough and I don't want price to be another hurdle for people trying to get help.

Assessment includes clinical interview, history taking and completion of appropriate psychometric scales in addition to a follow up appointment to discuss results, the next steps and a treatment plan for you.

Many people find assessment by a psychologist a fantastic way to get the process started and work on some treatment goals while they may be on a waiting list for a Psychiatrist and medication. Ongoing therapy appointments are also available.

You can call (07) 55345 133 (Elanora) or (07) 55228 166 (Mudgeeraba) or drop me a DM to arrange.

Remember - In Australia, a Psychologist cannot provide or prescribe medication for ADHD.
