I was a slave to my trauma ceiling.

Every time I’d focus on my goals.

Every time I’d face conflict in relationships.

Every time I’d start to feel relaxed.

Trauma would dysregulate my nervous system, saying this is not safe.

And I’d fight, I’d avoid, I’d hide, I’d shutdown.

Anything to make the overwhelm go away.

But it didn’t go away. It just got buried deeper, waiting until the next trigger.

At the time I blamed everything outside of me.

I didn’t realize my body was holding trauma until I went through a breakdown.

That’s what got me interested into understanding why my body was holding onto trauma.

And learning how to release myself from its grip.

Who is Benjamyn Fergusson — or as airport security always says, ā€œBenjamin… with a Y?ā€ šŸ˜…

šŸ‘£ I was told by Doctors, scoliosis couldn’t be healed. My spine—and life—disagreed. That healing became the spark that led me to work as a physical rehabilitation and movement therapist.

šŸ‘£ I built Melbourne’s first movement gym (pre-CrossFit)… and thought I had it all figured out.

šŸ‘£ Then I hit a wall. I was helping bodies—but I wasn’t healing people.
Turns out, unprocessed trauma was running the show—in me and in my clients.

šŸ‘£ So I went deeper. Somatic work. Internal martial arts. Energy cultivation and healing.
Practices that didn’t just stretch muscles—they rewired how I related to my body, and the world.

šŸ‘£ As I healed, practitioners started asking: ā€œWhat are you doing that gets these results?ā€
That’s when the Neuro Somatic School was born—so I could teach what I couldn’t explain with just anatomy charts.

This Was Me Before I Knew What Tension Was—But My Body Already Knew.

Before language.
Before beliefs.
Before I could explain why I felt tight, overwhelmed, or unsafe—
My body already knew.

From conception to age 7, your nervous system is a sponge.

You don’t just learn how to walk and talk—
You learn how to survive.

You learn whether the world is safe or not.
Whether your feelings are welcome or too much.
Whether you get to relax… or need to stay on guard.

That tension you feel now?
The tight shoulders, shallow breath, anxious system?
It’s not ā€œadult stress.ā€
It’s pre-verbal programming.
It’s the story your body never got to tell.

The way you move now…
The way you hold your jaw…
The way your breath catches in certain situations…
It all points back to a body that adapted before you had a choice.

That’s why I created Movement Monk.

Not just to improve flexibility or posture.
But to help unwind the unconscious patterns that have shaped how you exist in your body.

These practices don’t just teach movement—
They rewire the nervous system through presence, breath, and embodied safety.

They give your body the experience it never got to have—
Of being met.

ā€œI thought I was practicing Qigong, but all I was doing was copying forms.ā€ šŸ‘‡šŸ½

I obsessed over getting the movements ā€œright.ā€ I wanted to master each position, thinking precision would unlock something magical.

But something was missing.

Despite all the effort, I wasn’t feeling connection, flow, or ease in my body. Instead, I felt stuck in my head, constantly thinking about where my hands should go or how far my knees should bend.

The essence of Qigong isn’t about perfecting complex forms… It’s about connecting with yourself—through breath, awareness, and relaxed structure.

Simple Qigong strips away the need for rigid sequences and focuses on the core intent: cultivating inner flow and embodied awareness.

It starts with Mind-Body Awareness—learning to see your body not as something to control, but as something to feel. The eyes of awareness must open across your entire body, so you can sense where tension is hiding, where energy feels stuck, and where ease can flow.

Then comes Breath. Breath isn’t just something that happens—it’s what moves your body. Each inhale expands, each exhale softens. When you synchronize movement with breath, it’s no longer about positions—it’s about presence.

And finally, Structure. A relaxed and stable structure isn’t rigid; it’s grounded. It’s knowing how to stand in the world without tension, without forcing anything. It’s feeling rooted, supported by the earth, so that your body feels light and free to move.

This is what Simple Qigong taught me: You don’t need to memorize hundreds of movements or strive for perfection. You only need to reconnect with what’s already inside you—your breath, your body, your awareness.

When I stopped chasing perfection and started embodying these principles, Qigong transformed. It became a practice of presence, not performance. My mind quieted, my body softened, and I began to feel something I hadn’t in years: flow.

So, if you’re stuck in your head, constantly trying to ā€œget it rightā€ā€¦

Pause.

Feel your body.

Breathe.

Stand in your truth, rooted and relaxed.

This is where Qigong truly begins. And once you experience that connection, you’ll realize: it was never about mastering the form—it was about remembering yourself.

That’s the beauty of Simple Qigong—it brings you back to the simplicity of being.

Physical Wisdom: The Missing Link in Health & Fitness

Allow me to introduce myself - my name’s Benny Fergusson and Movement Monk is the project I started after realising that the health and fitness industry is broken - like my back was.

In 2010 I went from being an elite sports person, to not being able to walk down the street without pain. My spine was buckled like an old bike wheel.

And when I looked to physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy and many other modalities in the mainstream fitness sector ... no one could show me how to get lasting relief of the agonising pain I was in every day, so I could feel free in my body again.
