It's the chant no one wants to hear! 🦟

As we move into the warmer months, summer sport begins, but so does mosquito season. And the mozzies are match fit!

⁣Mozzies in Queensland can carry serious diseases, such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus and dengue.

Some of these diseases can cause long lasting symptoms or require medical assistance.⁣ That's why it's important to protect yourself whether you're enjoying the great outdoors at a sporting match, or just at home.

The best way to avoid mozzie bites is to:⁣
🦟 Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
👕 Wear loose-fitted, light-coloured clothing and covered footwear.
♨️ Use mosquito coils outdoors.
🏠 Remove breeding sites from your home (empty items that hold water, keep lawns mowed, drain and fill pools of water).

If you've been bitten by a mozzie and are worried about any symptoms you may have, please contact us on 0755680600.

Before you reach for that extra drink, ask yourself: is one more worth it? 🤔

Instead of adding to the night's fun, you could be cracking open a splitting headache, with a hangover leaving you feeling tired and irritable.

Alcohol can also mess with your mood, memory, sleep, energy, and overall health.

Here's some ways to make sure you don't overdo it:
🍷 Drink slowly and know your limit.
💦 Alternate alcohol with water.
🍽️ Eat before and while drinking.

The alcohol guidelines recommend no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day and no more than 10 standard drinks in a week.

If you or a loved one need support with alcohol, Adis 24/7 Alcohol and Drug Support offers free and confidential information and support. Call 1800 177 833 or chat online (8am to 10pm) via their website 👉 https://adis.health.qld.gov.au

Ingrown toenails toe-tally suck. 😩

A toenail becomes ingrown when the side of the nail curls in and jabs into the skin. This causes pain, redness, swelling and hardening of the skin around the nails.

It can be caused by things like wearing tight shoes or socks, cutting your nails too short or curved, or stubbing your toe. 👠

If you catch it early enough, you can treat it yourself over a few weeks. Soak your toe in warm water a few times a day. Then gently push the skin away from the corner of the nail with a cotton bud to help the nail grow forward. Once this happens, put a tiny piece of cotton wool under the edge of the nail until it grows over the skin (change the cotton wool daily).

If the ingrown toenail has been growing a long time, surgery might be needed to remove some or all of the nail.

Ingrown toenails can become infected. Signs of infection include throbbing pain, redness, heat, pus and bleeding around the toenail. You may also have a fever and feel unwell. 🤒

To help prevent ingrown toenails:
✅ keep your feet clean and dry
✅ wear shoes that fit properly (or go without shoes when possible)
✅ soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes to soften the nails before trimming
✅ trim your nails straight across and don't cut them too short.

If you have an ingrown toenail that won't heal, is getting infected or you have trouble trimming your nails, contact classic way family practice, for review

Some s*xually transmissible infections (STIs) have the potential to harm your unborn baby during pregnancy or at birth, if left untreated. 👶

That's why it's important to maintain good s*xual health before and during pregnancy. This includes STI testing, which you can do as part of your routine antenatal care.

To protect you and your baby from STIs:
👉 go to all your antenatal appointments
👉 have a full STI screen early in the pregnancy (preferably at your first antenatal appointment)—this should include syphilis, hepatitis B and C, HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhoea
👉 have a second syphilis test at 26-28 weeks and a third syphilis test at 36 weeks.

Even without symptoms, an untreated STI can cause long-term health effects. Syphilis can also cause a life-threatening infection in an unborn baby.

The good news you can treat most STIs, even during pregnancy. That's why regular STI testing and staying up to date with your antenatal appointments are important to protect you and your baby. ❤️

You’d never skip a car service, right? 🚗

Just like your car, your body needs a regular 'service' to run well.

Looking after yourself and getting health checks can help prevent chronic health conditions and diseases.

Chronic health conditions include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. They can last a long time (months or years), gradually get worse and severely affect your quality of life. They can often lead to other chronic problems such as pain or depression and anxiety.

Many of these can be prevented or managed by making some lifestyle changes and taking better care of yourself.

Here's how you can reduce your risk of developing a preventable chronic condition:
🚭 quit smoking/vaping
⛹️ stay active and exercise regularly
🥃 reduce your alcohol intake
🍌 eat a healthy, balanced diet
⚖️ maintain a healthy weight
🧘 reduce stress
🗓️ get a full health check at least once a year
❤️ have the recommended screening tests for your age (heart health, s*xual health, bowel, prostate, bone density).

Time to get yourself on the road to good health!

Make a plan to limit your added sugar intake. 🍭

Excessive sugar intake may increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes and contribute to poor dental health. 🦷

Scan the ingredients list on products to spot added sugars. Look out for common ingredients not clearly listed as ‘sugar’, like:
👉 syrups
👉 nectars
👉 glucose
👉 maltose
👉 dextrose
👉 fructose
👉 honey.

Remember, ingredients are listed by weight, so the earlier these names appear, the more sugar there is in the product.

Don't worry, you're not having a mango—but bub should be about the size of one by now. 🤰🥭

Your 18-20-week antenatal scan is an especially exciting one as it's when you can find out the s*x of your baby. 🩷💙

It's also an important scan to check for any major physical abnormalities in baby and make sure everything else is ok, including the blood supply to your baby and the length of your cervix.

Antenatal scans (routine ultrasounds you have during pregnancy) help monitor you and your bub's health during your pregnancy.

In a normal, low-risk pregnancy, you’ll usually only need three scans at:
👉 8-9 weeks (dating scan)
👉 11-13 weeks (first trimester scan)
👉 18-20 weeks (morphology scan).

If you're at a higher risk, or your health professional wants to check your baby’s growth and wellbeing, they may recommend extra ultrasounds.

You'll need a referral from your GP to get antenatal scans. They can be done at a radiology clinic or a hospital—you can choose.

Speak to your doctor or midwife about how to organise this. 💖

Yes fellas, we really are giving you permission to play with your balls! ⚾⚽

Testicular cancer is the second most common cancer (after melanoma) in Aussie males aged 20 to 39. But it can happen to men of any age, even in their teens. 😲

Your risk may be higher if someone in your family has had it, you had an undescended testicle (ball) as a baby, or you were born with hypospadias (when the urethra opens on the underside of the p***s).

Testicular cancer can't be caused by sports injuries, wearing tight clothes or having hot baths. 🛁

The ball's literally in your court. If you're aged 15 or over, a monthly ball check is the best way to catch any changes early and get treatment. 🗓️

In a warm bath or shower, check each ball by rolling it gently between your fingers and thumb. Also feel the tube at the back of your balls (epididymis) for any swelling. Healthy balls will feel firm and smooth.

You need to look out for:
🏀 a painless lump or swelling in either ball
🏀 a change in how your balls feel
🏀 an ache in your lower abdomen or groin
🏀 a sudden build-up of fluid in your sc***um (sack)
🏀 pain or discomfort in your balls or sack.

Notice something different? Stay ahead of the game and contact your GP , at Classic Way Family Practice.
