Parkinsonโ€™s Disease can change the way someone speaks, communicates, and swallows - but speech pathology plays a key role in keeping these skills strong and safe for as long as possible.

Speech pathologists can support people with Parkinsonโ€™s by helping with:
Speaking more clearly: Techniques that reduce mumbling, slurred speech, or fast speech patterns.
Improving voice loudness: Parkinsonโ€™s often causes a softer voice โ€” therapy can help strengthen and project the voice more effectively.
Supporting safe swallowing: Assessments and targeted strategies help reduce coughing, choking, and difficulties with eating or drinking.
Building better breath control: Working on breathing patterns helps support clearer, more steady speech.
Boosting everyday communication: Practical strategies, cues, and (when helpful) communication aids support confidence in conversations.

Every personโ€™s needs are different, and therapy is tailored to their goals, abilities, and daily routines.

Today, the 11th of April, is World Parkinson's Day and we here at Family Based Care Tasmania acknowledge and recognise not only the struggle and hardship brings to those who have it through their day to day but also the resilience and continuous growth of those to adapt and challenge it head on alongside support from direct care workers and loved ones.

Letโ€™s clear this one up!

Snacking isnโ€™t the problem. What and why you snack matters.

Research consistently shows that planned, balanced snacks can actually support better health by:
โ€ข Keeping blood sugar levels more stable
โ€ข Preventing extreme hunger and overeating at meals
โ€ข Supporting energy levels, concentration, and mood
โ€ข Helping meet daily nutrient needs, especially protein, fibre, and key vitamins

Snacks as a useful part of the day particularly for older adults, busy schedules, or higher energy needs. When snacks include protein, fibre, and healthy fats, they can improve satiety and overall diet quality.
Think yoghurt with fruit
Wholegrain crackers with cheese
Nuts and seeds
Fruit with nut butter
Snacking becomes unhelpful only when itโ€™s unplanned, low-nutrient, or driven by habit rather than hunger and thatโ€™s where personalised nutrition support can make a real difference.

At My NutriHealth Tasmania, our dietitians provide practical, evidence-based advice tailored to your lifestyle, health needs, and budget.

Home should be a place where you feel secure, comfortable, and confident. At Family Based Care Tasmania, weโ€™re here to help older adults and people living with disability stay safe and independent in their own homes.

We support people by focusing on the little things that make a big difference, such as:
Reducing the risk of falls โ€“ help with safe mobility, removing trip hazards, and encouraging safe routines
Support with everyday tasks โ€“ assistance with cleaning, meal preparation, shopping, and personal care
Building confidence โ€“ gentle encouragement, reassurance, and practical strategies to manage safely at home
Creating a safe environment โ€“ identifying risks and working with you and your family to make home more comfortable and secure
Allied health support โ€“ working alongside allied health professionals to put their recommendations into everyday practice

For many people, even a small amount of regular support can make home feel safer and more manageable.

If you or someone you care about would benefit from extra support at home, our friendly team is here to help.

Not eating enough can impact energy, mood, and overall wellbeing and itโ€™s more common than many people realise. Meeting your daily nutrition needs is essential for feeling and functioning at your best.

Here are three signs that may suggest you're not eating enough:

Low energy or constant fatigue
If you feel tired throughout the day or struggle to maintain focus or stamina, your body may be signalling that it needs more fuel.

Unintentional weight loss
Losing weight without trying is a common sign that your body isnโ€™t receiving the nutrition it needs to maintain muscle, strength and health.

Poor concentration or brain fog
When your brain isnโ€™t getting enough nutrients, it can become harder to think clearly, stay focused or process information efficiently.

If you recognise these signs, nutrition support can help you build a balanced, sustainable eating routine that supports your daily comfort, long-term health and lifestyle goals.

At My NutriHealth Tasmania, our dietitians provide practical, personalised nutrition strategies for older adults, people living with disability, and athletes working to improve performance and recovery.
