As temperatures rise, it's important to take simple steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your pets. Here's how:

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of waterโ€”even if you donโ€™t feel thirsty. Water is best. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Keep Out of the Heat: Stay indoors with fans or air-conditioning. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day. If thereโ€™s a cool breeze, open windows safely. Rest oftenโ€”heat can be exhausting.

Check on Others: Reach out to older relatives, neighbours, and friends with chronic health conditions to make sure theyโ€™re coping.

Dress for the Weather: Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing to help reflect heat and stay comfortable.

Minimise Sun Exposure: Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. If you must go outside, wear a hat, sunglasses, protective clothing and apply SPF30+ sunscreen.

Cool Your Home: Close blinds and curtains during the day. Use fans or air-conditioners set to cool. Open windows and doors when safe to let in cooler air.

Food Safety Matters: Hot weather increases the risk of food poisoning. Keep food refrigerated and avoid leaving it out too long.

Care for Your Pets: Make sure pets have shade and plenty of cool water. Avoid walking dogs during peak heat.

Seek Medical Help if Needed: Heat-related illness can be serious. In an emergency, call 000.
