Great advice for women who have completed their family and no longer need their tubes

A simple step during routine surgeries could be the key to helping prevent hard to detect ovarian cancers – and our amazing researchers are leading the way.

Most ovarian cancers actually start in the fallopian tubes, not the ovaries.

That’s a game-changer.

At the Women’s, Associate Professor Orla McNally and her team are pushing for a smart, preventative move: removing the fallopian tubes during other abdominal surgeries – like hysterectomies, gallbladder removal, or even hernia repairs.

It’s called opportunistic salpingectomy, and it’s already being adopted in Canada and Europe.

This approach is especially recommended for:
✅ anyone already having pelvic or abdominal surgery and
✅ women who’ve finished having children or
✅ those considering permanent contraception.

The Women’s is at the forefront of making this routine in Australia – with research underway to understand how women and surgeons feel about it.

What does it mean? Well, if you fit the criteria above and you're having surgery in your lower abdomen, you’d be encouraged to ask your doctor: Can my fallopian tubes be removed too?

It’s a small change. But it could be life-saving.

Do you know anyone who has just had a baby? Tag all your friends with new babies under 2 weeks. I’m after a newborn model for next week. They will receive 5 digital images of their choice for their time. Must not be booked in with another photographer for a newborn session.

Still desperately missing the opportunity to provide a private birthing service in NW Tasmania 🥺. I’m not moving and I haven’t given up 🤞.

The 2025 BJOG study revealed higher risks of stillbirth and poorer outcomes in standard public care—and yet we continue to sideline the role of specialists. Real reform demands real-time data, not ideological division. The recently published article in BJOG titled "Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes an...

Great to see potential support for Tasmanian IVF patients

Tasmanian women struggling with fertility costs could soon receive up to $2,000 in government support under a new subsidy program announced by the Liberals.

The election promise would support around 2,500 Tasmanian women with out-of-pocket costs for in vitro fertilisation (IVF), assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments and fertility preservation services.

The pledge is part of a broader women’s health package from the Liberals, which also includes four new BreastScreen clinics across the state and extra funding for women’s health service The Bubble.

If re-elected, the Liberal government also plans to push the federal government to subsidise non-invasive prenatal testing.

Please share this and make some noise about Medicare rebates for Gynae specialist visits. The Government has forgotten about specialists entirely (so far) in their Medicare related election campaign. Gynaes have NO rebates for long consults ☹️. That’s right NONE. GPs and Physicians can claim for . I cant 😞. My patients often need long consults to provide safe and complete care for their problem. This results in larger gap fees and much less bulk billing. just naming a few issues.

I wanted to share this powerful patient driven campaign from the Maternity Consumer Network and the rural perinatal podcast "Her Herd".

They've created a Campaign and it's generated some momentum in parliament. Did you know that we have lost 50% of rural maternity units across Australia since 1990, equating to over 140 units! Since the early 1990s, the number of babies born before arrival has increased by 50% nationally.

If you want to help please spend 2 mins emailing your Federal MP about rural maternity services. Click below for the email template to make it super easy:

We need urgent reforms that will protect, reinvest in, and reopen rural maternity services. The human cost of this crisis is profound: Families are being forced to travel long distances for maternity care, incurring significant financial burdens and emotional strain from being separated from loved o...
