Your body normally keeps itself cool by sweating and moving more blood towards the skin.

In extreme heat, or if you are physically active in hot weather, your body’s natural cooling system can begin to fail. Your body temperature can increase to dangerous levels, leading to severe heat-related illness including heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Heat-related illness can affect anyone and is more likely to happen when you are dehydrated and can’t produce enough sweat to help you cool down.

😰If you are experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion and need advice, phone healthdirect on 1800 022 222 anytime of the day or night for advice from a Registered Nurse. This is a free service.

🚨If you are experiencing symptoms of heat stroke, immediately call Triple Zero (000).

Everyone in the Far West should take precautions to protect themselves from extreme heat over the coming days.

β˜€οΈ Heatwave conditions are forecast across western NSW from tomorrow, Saturday 24 Jan.
β˜€οΈ These conditions will last until at least the middle of next week.

Extreme temperatures can cause life-threatening illness, and it is important to take action to stay cool and know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

You can reduce your risk of heat-related illness by:
βœ… closing blinds and curtains early
βœ… staying indoors during the hottest times of the day
βœ… staying hydrated and carrying a water bottle when outside

🌑️ Signs of heat-related illness can include headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and cramps. People with these symptoms should move out of the sun and seek shade or use a fan or air conditioning, take a cool shower or bath if possible and take sips of water.

🚨 People who do not respond to these steps or who show symptoms suggesting a more severe illness, including a sudden rise in body temperature, who are no longer sweating, showing aggressive or strange behaviour or who are fitting, should seek urgent medical attention or call Triple Zero (000).

For information on the latest heatwave warnings and advice, follow the NSW Ambulance social media pages or visit their website: www.ambulance.nsw.gov.au/in-the-community/warnings
