Have you ever wondered why we chose ‘Flip Your Lid’ as our business name?

Childhood trauma can have a profound impact on neurodivergent individuals, shaping their emotional responses and coping mechanisms. "Flipping your lid" denotes the overwhelming experience when stressors exceed one's ability to cope, often leading to intense emotional reactions. Nurturing a supportive environment and equipping neurodivergent children with effective coping strategies can be instrumental in fostering emotional regulation and resilience.

Some people may find it a strange name to use for a disability service however there is a much deeper connection. We thrive to aid in educating strategies for emotional regulation and personal growth for a for-filled future.

Take my hand and come with me,
I want to teach you about ADHD.
I need you to know, I want to explain,
I have a very different brain.
Sights, sounds and thoughts collide.
What to do first? I can’t decide.
Please understand I'm not to blame,
I just can't process things the same.

Take my hand and walk with me,
Let me show you about ADHD.
I try to behave, I want to be good,
But I sometimes forget to do as I should.
Walk with me and wear my shoes,
You'll see its not the way I'd choose.
I do know what I'm supposed to do,
But my brain is slow getting the message through.

Take my hand and talk with me,
I want to tell you about ADHD.
I rarely think before I talk,
I often run when I should walk.
It's hard to get my school work done,
My thoughts are outside having fun.
I never know just where to start,
I think with my feelings and see with my heart.

Take my hand and stand by me,
I need you to know about ADHD.
It's hard to explain but I want you to know,
I can't help letting my feelings show.
Sometimes I'm angry, jealous, or sad.
I feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and mad.
I can't concentrate and I lose all my stuff.
I try really hard but it's never enough.

Take my hand and learn with me,
We need to know more about ADHD.
I worry a lot about getting things wrong,
Everything I do takes twice as long.
Everyday is exhausting for me...
Looking through the fog of ADHD.
I'm often so misunderstood,
I would change in a heartbeat if I could.

Take my hand and listen to me,
I want to share a secret about ADHD.
I want you to know there is more to me.
I'm not defined by it, you see.
I'm sensitive, kind and lots of fun.
I'm blamed for things I haven't done.
I'm the loyalist friend you'll ever know,
I just need a chance to let it show.

Take my hand and look at me,
Just forget about the ADHD.
I have real feelings just like you.
The love in my heart is just as true.
I may have a brain that can never rest,
But please understand I'm trying my best.
I want you to know, I need you to see,
I'm more than the label, I am still me!!!!

I’m stuck in the mommy phase.⁣

The phase where my kids are on top of me even when I’m touched out,⁣ where I’m rocking babies even with a back that feels like it’s about to break,⁣ where I need to be present even in the moments where I want to hide in a bathroom and where there are non-stop tears and tantrums even when I’m exhausted.⁣

But it's also the phase of small arms reaching to hug me,⁣ of words slowly forming “I love you,”⁣
of taking in every inch of their little faces as they reluctantly fall asleep in my arms at night,⁣ of eyes brightening and excited screams when I walk into a room,⁣ and of having the mommy superpower of taking all their pain away.⁣

But the mommy phase is temporary⁣
because before we know it,⁣ time will come in and sweep it away.⁣

And just like that: “mommy” will become “mom.”⁣

And “Mommy, I can’t find my new toy!” spoken through squeaky sobs,⁣ will turn into a deeper, more confident, “Mom, do you know where my car keys are?”⁣

And yes, they’ll be sleeping through the night,⁣ I’ll have more personal space and more time for me.⁣

But that will also mean they’ll be closer to braving this world without me and my heart will never be entirely ready for that.⁣

So, right now, I'm stuck in the mommy phase and I couldn’t be more grateful.

You know when your partner says he has to stop somewhere on the way home from work and the text comes through in the shape of a knife?
It’s not because you’re incapable.
It’s because you’ve been at capacity since 11:00am, and they really do feel like the longest 10 minutes of your life.
You know when someone asks after the kids but you also wish they’d ask how you were doing? You’re the one holding it together, the one unpacking bags, thoughts and feelings.
It’s not because you’re selfish.
It’s because the mother needs mothering too.
You know how you don’t get the invite sometimes and it’s probably because you say "no" a lot. And so you feel a little empty and resentful?
It’s not because you’re being petty.
It’s because you want people to see you through all the unseen, even if you forget to see yourself.
You know how you keep numbers in your head like birth weights and play dates, milestones and appointments, and you find it hard to hand any of it over?
It’s not because you’re a control freak.
It’s because it has always fallen on you, and even though you have a supportive partner, you know you’ll somehow always carry that weight.
You know how you flip your head forward in the morning and tie your hair into something that resembles goodness knows what, and someone mentions something about self care?
It’s not because you’re not trying.
It’s because maybe their village looks different to yours.
You know how they say to enjoy every minute, but you’re literally giving so much of your energy right now. This is what happens when you become a mother. You give and you give and you give until it feels like there's not a lot left.
It’s not because you’re ungrateful.
It’s because this is the reality some days, this is a season.
We are held when we're small, but sometimes not enough when we feel small.
I know, because same.

Red Beast: Controlling Anger in Children with Asperger's Syndrome

I cannot recommend this wonderful book highly enough. The book helps children to understand what is happening to them when they get angry. The author cleverly describes anger as a red beast. The wonderful illustrations and simple story help children to talk about how their red beast makes them feel and how they can learn to tame it. The author also takes time to explain the strategies used to support children with ASD. I would definitely recommend this for any parent who is struggling with an angry child.
