Watching our clients grow in confidence and communication is the most rewarding part of what we do. 💛

Our wonderful client Samantha's favourite thing about speech therapy is talking with her SP Alycia about her speech, and receiving help. 💬

We hope to make speech therapy a highlight that clients look forward to, and our lovely Speech Pathologists make that a reality for many. ✨

✨Care for Carers✨

This week at Speak and Swallow we've been celebrating National Carers Week - a time to recognise, honour, and raise awareness for the amazing people who provide care to those in need.

A huge shoutout to all of the amazing carers who support our clients. Thank you for the compassion, time, and care you give each day. You make a difference, and we see you!

From all of us at Speak and Swallow, we thank you for being part of the team behind every success story. We’re so grateful to walk alongside you and your supports.💙

From picture boards to high-tech devices - Augmentative and Alternate Communication (AAC) has come a long way!💙

As AAC evolves, so does quality of life - empowering individuals to express themselves fully, connect with others, and live with greater independence.

The NeuroNode Trilogy represents an advanced communication system, combining NeuroNode (EMG), eye gaze, and touch control in one device. This advanced AAC system offers more speed, more control, and more opportunities for authentic expression.✨

Communication may look different for everyone, and we're grateful for the ongoing evolution of AAC—ensuring every person has a voice to share their thoughts, needs, and identity.

Sensory engagement offers meaningful fulfilment for many people living with dementia, promoting connection and communicative interaction. ✨

Our Speech Pathologist Stephanie promotes incorporating sensory strategies into a variety of her sessions, as seen in the image below. Through the use of touch, sound, scent, and visual cues, opportunities for meaningful interaction are created.

These approaches tap into preserved areas of the brain, helping to spark memories, regulate emotions, and preserve connection. Communication goes far beyond words 💬💛

Grateful for the connections, collaborations, and shared passion that come with being part of the SLP community. 💬✨

We had the pleasure of welcoming the lovely Sam, a Speech Pathologist visiting from Victoria, to our clinic. During her visit, Sam observed an in-practice instrumental assessment and even had the opportunity to experience a Functional Laryngoscopy Assessment herself.

Thank you, Sam, for connecting with us and sharing your enthusiasm for the field! 👏💙

The month of October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month.💛

Throughout this month we will be sharing the importance of AAC, and how it positively affects quality of life, and communication for many. ✨

AAC is not one size fits all - it includes everything from gestures and communication boards, to high-tech devices. For some, AAC is a lifelong tool; for others, it's a temporary support.

💬 Everyone deserves a way to express their thoughts, needs, and identity — and AAC helps make that possible.

One of our lovely clients has brought life to this drawing through colour, after hearing that her Speech Pathologist Tayla had welcomed a new puppy into her home. 🐶🎨

It's moments like this that remind us communication with clients is more than therapy - it's connection, creativity, and joy.❤️

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN 👋

Did you know that in the AUSLAN alphabet, the hand motion that signs the vowels are in order from thumb to pinky, pointing to the tip of each finger?

Sign language is vital for many members in our community at Speak and Swallow. This language gives people across the world a voice, and a sense of belonging.

As a fundamental human right - sign language provides people with the ability to communicate, and feel heard. It allows for members of the community to feel included and to interact with no vocal ability.

Our Speechies recently took part in a pickleball tournament to raise money for the MND and Me Foundation. 🧡

MND and Me is a not-for-profit charity that works towards raising awareness and funds for research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This foundation ensures that all Queenslanders who face MND receive equitable access to support.

Thank you to everyone who helped us raise $820 for this wonderful organisation! 👏
..Pssst-> A special shout-out to Phoebe for winning the title of 'Most Enthusiastic Player' 😁🏓

Opportunities like this are one of the reasons we 💛 being on the Speak and Swallow team!🤩

If you work in the dysphagia space, you've probably heard of Professor Maggie-Lee Huckabee, and her research and knowledge in this area. We certainly had - one of our team members even got her copy of "Dysphagia Following Stroke" signed! 🤩

Our team were grateful to get a practical demonstration of BiSSkApp, Professor Maggie-Lee's creation, which has totally changed the game in dysphagia treatment and management.

BiSSkApp allows patients to remotely access rehabilitation, creating a more accessible and effective treatment for people impacted by swallowing difficulties.

Professor Maggie Lee’s passion and dedication to improving client swallow outcomes has inspired our team tremendously.
