Drishti is a Sanskrit term primarily referring to a "focused gaze" in yoga, aimed at developing concentration and directing energy (prana) by looking at specific points.

There are nine main drishtis (e.g., nose, thumb, hand) that help practitioners move from external focus to internal awareness, acting as a tool for dharana (concentration).

Vasisthasana, or Side Plank Pose, is a powerful culmination of strength and flexibility, challenging your balance and building muscular strength.

It strengthens the musculoskeletal system, activates the Solar Plexus (Manipura Chakra), and tones the arms, shoulders, core, and obliques.

What happens physiologically in a hot yoga class?

Infrared heat penetrates beneath the skin into muscles and connective tissue (fascia).

This helps muscles become more pliable faster. It
allows for safer, deeper stretching and reduces the “cold stiffness” feeling at the start of class.

Infrared heat also expands blood vessels (vasodilation), improves oxygen delivery to tissues and encourages sweating at a lower ambient temperature which
supports natural detox pathways.

✨ What an incredible experience co-delivering today's workshop with Sharon of Yoga Flow Teacher Training on the biomechanics and continuum of yoga ✨

This workshop was all about bridging the gap between science and practice—bringing a deeper level of understanding into how and why we move the way we do on the mat.
Together, we explored how intelligent sequencing can support the body through the full continuum of yoga—from mobility and stability through to strength and resilience. Each phase was intentionally layered to create both physiological adaptation and a meaningful embodied experience.

We unpacked the role of anatomy trains, looking at how fascial lines connect the body as an integrated system rather than isolated parts—completely transforming the way we approach movement and cueing.

We also dived into sensory pathways, highlighting how proprioception, interoception, and the nervous system influence not just movement quality, but awareness, control, and overall practice outcomes.

And of course, we explored the stages of stretching—moving beyond passive lengthening to a more nuanced understanding of tissue adaptation, load, and nervous system response.

Co-delivering this workshop was such a rewarding opportunity to share knowledge, collaborate, and empower others to teach and practice with more intention, clarity, and confidence.

Grateful for the experience and already looking forward to the next one 🙏

Today’s class at Hunt Road focused on building strength and stability through the shoulders and arms 💪

We worked on supporting the glenohumeral joint by activating the rotator cuff and strengthening key muscles like the deltoids and triceps, while improving control through the joint.

Using Anatomy Trains, we explored the Superficial Front and Back Arm Lines to connect the arms to the body, with support from the Deep Front Line for core stability.

Strong, stable, and connected ✨

Celebrating the anniversary today of completing Yoga Teacher Training seven years ago. I first discovered yoga in my 30s after years of dance and gymnastics. I suppose I steered away from it because I wasn't sure it would be challenging enough lol. How wrong I was! What I've learnt over the the years is that yoga hits differently for everybody. It is what you want it to be. For me, it helped me become stronger and much more stable after spinal surgery. Since then, it has become a necessary elixir that I absolutely need for my mental and physical health. I encourage anyone to explore the world of yoga, regardless of where you are currently at.

Offering variations or options in yoga means giving students different ways to perform a pose so it suits their body, ability, experience level, or how they feel on that day.

Rather than teaching one “fixed” version of a posture, your teacher should provide choices that make the practice more accessible, safe, and inclusive.

For instance:
- Easier option (regression):
Reduces intensity or complexity as shown in the preparatory Compass pose as demonstrated by Vanessa on the far left.

- Standard option (baseline):
The version most students can work toward safely. Cailin in the middle is demonstrating prep pose for Sage Visvamitrasana done from a kneeling position.

- Advanced option (progression), adds challenge, strength, balance, or flexibility:

In this example on the right, Lisa is demonstrating a full expression of Sage Visvamitrasana.

Each of these poses are challenging in their own way and integrate elements of split, hip and shoulder opening, twisting, and balance. This mighty pose also focuses on chest opening, abs and core, and may be taught as part of a hot yoga, power yoga, or vinyasa class.

Remember there is always an option to suit you!

Welcome to Botanique Yoga & Wellness

Botanique Yoga is a venture run by Lisa Randall who is a qualified yoga teacher with approximately 20 years of practice under her belt. She comes from a dance and gymnastics background which she participated in until her 30’s, however the higher impact activities, along with other factors, eventually led to her having lower back problems later in life. As a result, Lisa underwent a spinal fusion of L4/L5 in 2018 and since then, has used yoga as a way to ensure recovery, improve strength, increase range of motion and manage pain and stiffness.

Lisa’s real passion is teaching strong, hot yoga classes due to the profound benefits of infrared heat on the body including the detoxification it provides, the ability to improve flexibility and the direct benefits it has for strengthening the spine. She currently teaches privately at Botanique Skin & Spa as well as at World Gym Burpengary and runs regular yoga retreats. Outside of the gym, she works as a qualified remedial massage and skin/beauty therapist and owner of Botanique Skin & Spa. She is also in the process of completing an Adv Dip in Nutritional Counselling with a focus on diet in relation to chronic illness, women's issues and skin disorders as she strongly believes in a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.

This page aims to assist anyone who has an interest in improving their physical and mental well being through the practice of yoga and other healthy lifestyle practices. Please feel free to get in touch at any time to discuss how we can help you!
