Have you ever skipped a cool down after a workout or think a stretch is a waste of time?

Let me clear something up, with exercise science - cooling down isn’t just a “nice to do” it’s essential. Here’s why...

When you exercise, your body produces blood lactate as part of your natural energy system. For years, lactate got a bad rap for causing soreness (lactic acid pain is false) Research shows lactate is a powerful fuel.

This does not mean exercise must be painful - it shouldn't!

After exercise, your body recycles lactate by circulating it through your bloodstream, where it can be used by the heart, brain, and muscles as energy.

Here's the surprising part....if you stop mid workout to answer your phone or respond to an email, this can cause fatigue, muscular damage, nausea even affect your immune system.

A proper 10 min cool-down like light walking, stretching or yoga keeps your blood moving, clearing out lactate slowly, reducing fatigue priming your system for your next workout.

Lactate is also involved in cellular signalling which supports the production of immune cells so your recovery literally helps you stay healthier.

Your take home message:
Cool down to clear lactate, it will reduce fatigue, boost recovery, support immunity, and improve performance.

What works for me might not work for you. And that’s not a flaw, it’s a feature of being human.

In a world full of one-size-fits-all fitness plans, evidence-based yoga and exercise remind us that individually you deserve an approach that honours your body, your history, your past surgeries, pregnancies, miscarriages, traumas, healing......

Science now supports what yogis have always known that movement is medicine. But not just any movement. The kind that meets you & evolves with you. The kind that doesn’t shame or push or mould you, but instead invites you to come home to yourself.

This is where yoga becomes more than a stretch class, it's a holistic conversation with your mind, body, and breath.
A way to listen.
A way to heal.
A way to strengthen from the inside out.

It’s not about the deepest pose or the hardest workout. It’s about moving with intelligence, with intention, and most of all, with compassion.

So let’s stop searching for the perfect program and start asking better questions.

What does my body need today?

We examined real human bodies doing backbends (yep, actual plastinated poses!) to mind-blowing facts about how happiness literally rewires your brain , we laughed, we cringed, we were intrigued by the intricacies and workings within us all.

After years in the fitness and rehab world, I’ve seen time and time again…clients who don’t recover after surgery. What they fail to understand is recovery doesn’t come from the surgery itself, but from everything that happens before and after it.
Too often, people see surgery as the solution, but it’s not the finish line, it’s just a turning point. The outcomes we want come from consistent movement, strength, mobility, and commitment. This includes a daily movement plan that supports your life, your environment and a healthy future you can enjoy.

Two weeks of hiking the Swiss Alps, 15-20 thousand steps per day over and through mixed terrain in high altitude takes a high level of fitness.

We took magnesium and hydrolyte to supplement fluid loss from the extreme heat and packed plenty of bananas for instant energy hits.

We ate fairly well with no big meals and limited alcohol ensuring we bounced out of bed early each morning (though we balanced this out with Swiss cheese and wine)

Real fitness is the skill of navigating fast, predicting your environment with spatial awareness. It’s quick adaptation and recovery.

We’ve seen what my husband calls, “the most beautiful place in the world”. The hard work to each summer, ridge or peak certainly makes the view sweeter.

If my post has inspired one person to take up hiking, start with daily walking. Buy good shoes and keep a well prepared backpack including roller bandages in case of sprains, insect repellent, sunscreen and an anaesthetic/antiseptic cream. There’s some stinging nettles that have a firey bite if you brush up against them.

Sharon is an Australian Yoga enthusiast, freelance writer, fitness fanatic and lover of life. She manages the Fitness department in Australia’s largest World Gym, is Head Lecturer at Global Fitness College for upcoming superstar Personal Trainers and Group fitness leaders.
