Statement from Unique By Nature Allied Health Services
As an organisation working closely with neurodivergent children, young people, and families, we are deeply concerned about the direction of the 'Thriving Kids' program and the potential harm it may cause if implemented without proper safeguards.
Removing or reducing access to NDIS supports without ensuring access to genuinely neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed, and evidence-based therapies places children and families at risk. When appropriate supports are not provided, the impacts extend beyond the individual, affecting families, education systems, mental health services, and the wider community.
At Unique By Nature Allied Health Services, we strongly uphold the principle of “Nothing About Us Without Us.” Any new programs must be co-designed with neurodivergent people, families, and affirming professionals to ensure that reforms are both safe and effective. Without this community-led approach, there is a real danger of reverting to deficit-based models that pathologise difference rather than celebrating and supporting it.
The risk is too great to proceed without full and meaningful community involvement. Neurodivergent children deserve services that recognise their strengths, respect their lived experiences, and empower them to thrive authentically.
We call on government decision-makers to ensure that reforms are inclusive, transparent, and led in partnership with the communities they aim to serve.
