Here's one case study regarding menopause, which is very common in middle aged women.

Q: I am a 49 year old female. I have become extremely irritable and wake up frequently during the night with profuse sweating. I constantly need to change my clothes and sheets and struggle to sleep most nights.

A: These signs are indicative of hot flushes which occur during menopause. Hot flushes, irritability and insomnia are the result of deeper imbalances that, if left untreated, will persist later in life. If your lifestyle is unhealthy during your 30s and 40s, you are more likely to have hot flushes, be irritability and experience insomnia when your hormones start to change. If your lifestyle is healthy, you will complete this journey with less trouble. Health problems during menopause are signs of deeper imbalances in the body.

Ayurveda describes hot flushes as a pitta disorder. The excess pitta or fire element in the body makes women feel like they are on fire. The body channels are also clogged with wastes, toxins or ama. The heat produced from metabolism builds up in the body tissues. Hot flushes are the result of a sudden increase in blood flow when the body tries to unclog the channels while simultaneously dissipating heat.

The following treatments are available:

1. Diet and Herbs-Ayurveda recommends diet which has a cooling effect on the body. This means avoiding greasy, spicy and acidic foods. Some Ayurvedic herbs are very effective in treating hot flushes.

2. Panchkarma treatment-Panchkarma treatment may be needed to unclog the body's channels and gain quick relief. In Panchkarma, herbal oil massages, heat treatments and internal herbal cleansing therapies are used to reduce the ama or toxins in the body.

3. Yoga and Pranayam-some gentle yoga postures and Pranayam are helpful in balancing the body's energy and calming the mind.

Acupuncture also works very well for hot flushes and relieves menopausal symptoms.

Ayurveda and Acupuncture promotes a state of balance for your body mind and sprit. These traditional medicines treat the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. These therapies do not result in adverse side effects.

AcuAyur Holistic Health Centre provides a comprehensive approach in natural health care to treat menopause. If you are experiencing menopause, or you would like more information, then please contact AcuAyur Holistic Health Centre on (03) 9803 8718.
