October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. While some risk factors like age, family history, and genetics cannot be changed, there are some sensible lifestyle choices you can make that may lower your risk.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following:

✔️ Avoid smoking – To***co use raises the risk of many cancers, including breast cancer.
✔️ Breastfeed if you can – It benefits both mother and baby’s health.
✔️ Limit or avoid alcohol – Regular moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a higher risk.
✔️ Maintain a healthy weight – Extra weight, especially after menopause, is linked to increased risk.
✔️ Engage in regular physical activity – Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
✔️ Minimise unnecessary radiation exposure – Talk to your doctor about whether imaging tests are for you.

Early detection is lifesaving. Regular breast checks, screenings, and paying attention to any changes make a real difference.

This October is the month to raise awareness and empower women to self-care, support and promote healthier futures.

Meet Molly, who will be joining the EPG as a psychologist in October 2025.

Molly takes a warm, thoughtful, and collaborative approach to her work. She draws on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), integrating them in a practical and flexible way to support clients in gaining insight and moving toward what matters to them most.

Molly believes that meaningful change begins with understanding, not just of current challenges, but of the patterns and experiences that sit beneath them. She works with curiosity and care, creating a space where clients feel supported to explore their values, reflect on their story, and make decisions that align with who they want to be. Whether someone is feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of their next steps, Molly works alongside them to build clarity, confidence, and a sense of direction.
Molly is welcoming referrals now, for appointments starting in October.

Dr Peter Cheng returned to Balwyn High School recently to speak with and inspire students from Year 7–12 at a Career Insights session.

He shared stories from his journey since leaving here, from pharmacy to medicine, volunteering overseas and now as Principal GP at Elevate Medical today. Dr Peter reminded students that a career in healthcare is about more than science; it’s about service, resilience, and compassion.

Now as a Specialist GP & Skin Cancer Physician, he continues to make a difference each day — with patients and by mentoring and sharing his experiences with young people.

At Elevate Medical, we’re committed to caring for our patients and supporting the broader community.

Thank you Balwyn High School for welcoming Dr Peter. We hope this session inspires some students to dream and explore future possibilities.

Hey fellas (and anyone who loves someone with a prostate):

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Let’s talk about the prostate — a small gland (about the size of a walnut) that plays a big role in the male reproductive system. It sits just below the bladder and wraps around the urethra — the tube that carries urine and semen.

Here’s what you should know:

👉 Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men.
👉 Risk increases with age, especially if a close family member was diagnosed before age 65.

Some symptoms to watch out for:
• Needing to urinate more often (especially at night)
• Trouble starting or maintaining a urine stream
• Pain or discomfort when urinating
• Blood in urine or semen
• Lower back, hip, or thigh pain

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer — but they’re worth a chat with your GP.
There are a couple of screening options available, and they’re not one-size-fits-all. That’s why having a conversation with your doctor is so important. For most men aged 50–69, informed decision-making is the key.

Got a prostate? Book a check-in. A quick chat could lead to early detection and that could save your life.

Waking up tired? You're not alone.

Nearly 1 in 3 Australians struggle with sleep issues, and it's affecting more than just how groggy you feel in the morning.

Poor sleep impacts:
- Your immune system's ability to fight off illness
- Memory, concentration, and decision-making
- Heart health and blood pressure
- Mood regulation and mental wellbeing
- Weight management and metabolism

Sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome are treatable conditions. You don't have to accept poor sleep as "normal."
