Associate Professor Nicole Reilly, researcher from our Burwood Hospital shines a light on birth trauma this World Maternal Health Day. Around a third of women report that their experience of giving birth was traumatic. For some women, this can lead to a range of emotional health challenges, including difficulties bonding with their baby or childbirth-related PTSD. The impacts of birth trauma can also affect fathers and other non-birthing partners.

This toll is greater than many may realise, read more: https://www.sjog.org.au/blog/2024/april/anzac-day-is-a-reminder-there-is-hope-and-help-for-veterans-and-military-personnel

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment for people with mild to moderate depression, particularly when other treatments haven’t worked well. It uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that help regulate mood, which can become underactive during depression.

TMS is usually provided alongside other supports such as medication, and group or individual therapy to help improve overall wellbeing. A typical course involves about 20–25 sessions.

During TMS treatment, one of our trained caregivers monitors you, and you can relax by listening to music, watching a movie, or talking with loved ones. A referral from your GP is required.

This Easter reminds us that hope doesn't always come with certainty or clear answers. In health care especially, it is rarely loud or dramatic. Instead, hope reveals itself in the moments that truly matter. May you find time this Easter to pause, reflect, and recognise the small yet meaningful signs of hope around you.
