The first of “the big days”, and it’s a big topic! Su***de stigma.

Would you ever ask someone if they’re feeling suicidal? Did you know that asking something this, that is contemplating su***de, developing a plan for an attempt, or has already attempted su***de, doesn’t increase their risk to proceeding with said plan. Mental health first aid training has also shown that people will openly disclose that they are in this state of mind, and often happy to discuss. This is our chance to act. Our chance to help. Our chance to have a conversation and spare someone one of life’s most precious assets - time.

Reduce the stigma. By pushing for better we’re opening the conversation.

Bringing you the details of the “Heads Down Push Up” team. A small feature including picture, name and fun fact/reason why they’re participating.

Team Leader and man behind the mask: Ben Hanna-Polkinghorne
🔸
• Push for better challenge Yr.2
🔸
• Reason for participation: My tipping point to raise awareness came after a young male su***de of a close family friend in 2021.
More so than the su***de, I believe the importance of mental health awareness has never been needed more. I had been ignorant and oblivious to the complications and difficulties for people that face mental health challenges, but yet have long been surrounded by people in these positions. I have grandparents that experience anxiety and PTSD, a mother with post natal depression, siblings experiencing acute anxiety and depression and what awoke me most, a wife that battled severe acute anxiety and resultant ptsd. I didn’t understand it, I wasn’t educated enough to not only listen, but hear conversations, and I now know I’m not alone in this.
My duty in this challenge is not to make people aware of my battles or anyones near to me, it’s to help all of us/you that don’t quite understand mental health and how it can effect someone because of your own beliefs and experiences. Helping people to be more educated and aware so we can help those in need when it may be required, because we cant predict or control when these troubles may effect us💪🏼🙌🏼📖

Meet Noel!
A 73 year weekly regular. This week we achieved a milestone for Noel dropping his total body weight below 100kg for the first time in 35 YEARS!! 🌟

His improvements include dropping 9.5kg total weight, taking 7cm off his waist, a decrease in systolic blood pressure by 25mmHg, and decreasing his diastolic BP by 10mmHg >>> no doubt all life extending accomplishments.

Noel complimented his weekly sessions with 2-3 thirty minute rides every week 🚲, participating in the local Heart Foundation Walking Group every Wednesday ♥️ , decreasing alcohol consumption 🍺 and choosing leaner, white meats more regularly 🐟 . His dedication to improve his health is highly commendable and Noel has created realistic, manageable lifestyle changes.

⏳ Time restricted eating, or what you may have heard more commonly referred to as intermittent fasting has a lot of attention for its health benefits.

💪🏼 What we do know: It definitely has benefits.
What we do not know: The optimal fasting & feeding durations

🍴 Crash diet programs and scientists alike are promoting the benefits of what is most commonly a 16&8 fast, or up to 24 hour fast.

The Australian study summarised below has investigated a 14&10 fast with the last meal to be finished BEFORE 7:30pm.
Benefits include: ↘️ Reductions in body weight, visceral fat mass, percent body fat, fasting blood glucose and HbA1c

Every week I put up a “Food For Thought” statement for my clients, in the hope of developing a little motivation to exercise, share the benefits of exercise or sometimes to help think of exercise a little more laterally.

This week I did something fun, and it’s even left me quite gobsmacked! In the spirit of the recent Tokyo Olympics I thought I’d mark out an achievement of an Aussie Hero 🦘 from the games. Cue, Brandon Starc, 5th in the high jump at a whopping 2.35m! I’m on my toes and full stretch over head here! What an Incredible leap! 🏃🏻‍♂️😵

When the idea came to my head I honestly thought it was just going to be somewhere on the white board. 😅

Educator mode, activated.

I ran my first Diabetes WA SMARTS course on Thursday, to great success. A full morning class in CarbSMART 🍞 and many staying on for our MedSMART 💊 course in the afternoon.

Complimentary to DESMOND, SMARTS take our participants through specific topics related to diabetes to further help with self management.

Stay peeled as SWMH has plans to increase Busselton’s access to SMARTS with fortnightly sessions coming soon!
