Miss Saffy came in to be desexed recently, and she was an absolute sweetheart ๐
Her visit also gives us the purr-fect excuse to talk about female cat desexingโฆ and those dramatic heat cycles ๐

Desexing (spaying) means removing the ovaries and uterus โ and it comes with some pretty great perks:
- No surprise kittens ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑ
- No heat cycles (aka midnight yowling, rolling on the floor like a possum, and flirting with furniture)
- Reduced risk of nasty uterine infections (pyometra)
- A much lower risk of mammary cancer later in life
Basically: fewer hormones, more peace and quiet ๐

Female cats can come into heat as young as 4โ5 months old. When theyโre in heat, you might notice:
- Very loud, very dramatic vocal performances ๐ถ
- Excessive affection (even with table legs)
- Rolling, crouching, and a lot of โlook at meโ behaviour
Unlike dogs, ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ด๐ผ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎโ๐ฏ ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ธ๐ during breeding season โ because once clearly isnโt enough ๐

Short answer: Yes, it usually is.
Longer answer:
When cats are in heat, their reproductive organs have increased blood supply
This can make surgery a little trickier and slightly increase bleeding risk
That said, many cats are safely desexed while on heat every day
Your vet will always assess whatโs safest for your cat โ and sometimes itโs better to proceed than endure another encore performance ๐ค
