Rachel Zinman and John Weddepohl offer इष्टम् ISHTAM, specialising in orthodox knowledge, whether it is the knowledge of yoga (yoga vidya) or knowledge of the Self (atma vidya), इष्टम् ISHTAM uses a little known teaching methodology to ensure understanding ancient wisdom is easy. Buried in secrecy by teachers who discouraged sharing it, इष्टम् ISHTAM’s unique teaching method helps students break open the secret meaning of yoga hidden in the शास्त्र sastra (scriptures). Taught by Krishna and Adi Shankara, two of India’s greatest teachers in the upanishadic tradition, the method of teaching forms part of the means of knowledge (called प्रमाण pramana), to uplift humanity and resolve the problem of human suffering. Besides orthodox knowledge, इष्टम् ISHTAM also combines the best in modern yoga. Not about how many postures you do, success in yoga comes in maintaining a regular home practice. As a teacher or student of yoga you may struggle to maintain your practice due to time or injuries. Rachel and John the core teachers ofइष्टम् ISHTAM share इष्ट माला ISHTA-Mala** - a practice for life. A vinyasa krama, Mala fits everyday individual needs, abilities and time frames and is gaining a following as a complete practice. Together John and Rachel share इष्टम् ISHTAM at festivals, teacher trainings and workshops around the world. Theyl live in Byron Bay, Australia and run yoga teacher trainings and workshops year round. They also share their love of music in Kirtan as often as possible.

इष्टम् ISHTAM consists of - इष्ट विद्या ISHTA Vidya (Supreme Self-Knowledge) - इष्ट योग ISHTA Yoga (Maha Yoga) - इष्ट क्रिय ISHTA Kriya (Kriya Siddha Meditation) and - इष्ट माला ISHTA-MALA** (a practice for life).

Just before the day got moving I did in this short choreographic exploration

Today in my morning meditation I took stock of this word abundance and how, when I think about it, everything is available in abundance, especially when I break it down to the basics: space, air, fire, water, earth.
It’s easy to feel lack, or like things are limited, especially if I get caught up in having or not having… but when I zoom out, in reality, creation is ever abundant.
We humans limit ourselves by thinking that what we have is who we are.
I’m starting to write down more of what I learned in India from my Vedanta master on Substack, and sharing more of in my stories too.
Friends, now is the time to contemplate these ideas. It’s truly a life-raft in this crazy storm. 🙏

Today is our 15 year anniversary! This is the day my life changed forever. Having heard about as a fellow yogi who was friends with my teacher to meeting him online in 2010 and realising we had way more in common than was possible to actually meeting on the beach in South Goa on March 7 2011. How we went on a year long date to get to know each other to years of teaching together and sharing a deeply intimate life I couldn’t have asked for ishvara to bring me a better partner and best friend. John always inspires and truly lived what he shares.. Together we have a simple life that feels big in our hearts. My prayer is that what we have together and what we share helps all human beings to know the magnificence they are.

Mudras are a silent language that accesses our nervous system and helps us feel calm and tolerate challenging circumstances.
Most people think yoga is just physical postures, but the ta***ic techniques that sit alongside the physical practice are just as profound, maybe more so.
This five element mudra sequence moves from the throat all the way down to the base of the body, covering space, air, fire, water and earth. It takes you from ungrounded to grounded. It can really help when times are tough.
We did this in our Yoga for Over 50s class on Friday and it felt beautiful.
I still have plenty of room for drop-ins at the Yogalates Studio in Bangalow, just four sessions left, Fridays 8–9.30am. Send me a DM if you’d like to come along.
And if you enjoyed this practice, let me know in the comments.

Mantra and yantra are powerful ta***ic techniques because they focus the mind, drawing it away from its preoccupation with thoughts, leaving one free to be with oneSelf — the stillness itself.
As we move through the aging process we often become more sensitive. This is both a gift and a challenge. Learning to tune into the subtle body, and working with the yantras that relate to the chakras, helps balance the elements in the body, support the flow of prana (life force), and expand our capacity to tolerate our own sensitivity.
There are just a couple of days left to join my Yoga for Over 50’s class in Bangalow.

7 Days to Go! Yoga for Over 50’s

As we move beyond 50, it’s natural to feel shifts — perhaps a little less momentum, a pull to slow down, or even to withdraw. But this stage of life can also be a powerful invitation to move with greater awareness and care.

We blend yoga, somatic movement, breathing, and meditation to help build nervous system resilience and cultivate patience with your body as it changes. Because while we may wish things stayed the same… life moves in seasons — and the body moves through ages and stages too.

Here’s a window into what we did in our Yoga for Over 50’s class today.
We started with vagus nerve toning — ear massage, gentle touch to the face and Brahmari pranayama. Simple, practical tools to regulate the nervous system.
Then we worked with hamstring openers and stretches. The hamstrings relate to the bladder meridian and the theme of letting go. We let the breath be natural and steady.
We moved into standing poses and balancing poses, including Hasta Padangusthasana and Supta Hasta Padangusthasana. Strength, mobility and balance — all essential as we age.
We closed with a ta***ic visualisation to balance the emotions, linking the vagus nerve, the hamstrings and the emotional body. When the nervous system settles and the body softens, emotions are easier to meet.
Over 50, things shift. There can be tension, stiffness, unexpected issues. This work is about being gentle with yourself while still building strength and resilience. Learning to accept and work with your body as it is.
This course is a chance to practise in community with others in the same stage of life — people who get it.
Fridays Feb 27 – March 27

What’s happened to our relationship with time and attention? Who remembers the excitement of having two whole hours to yourself to indulge in a massage, a walk on the beach, a yoga class, or a lunch with a friend? Time has somehow lost its edge. We can’t stand having time on our hands and every second needs to be filled. Scrolling on the train, scrolling in line at the bank (if you even go to one anymore), scrolling on your beach walk, scrolling during the movie.
I heard recently that they have slowed down the frame rate of movies to give people time to scroll on their phones because people are experiencing that much dopamine depletion while watching the movie.
And scrolling is even less satisfying than it was a year ago. The algorithm decides what you want to see. Yesterday it was an ad for water purifiers. There were at least 20 different brands that all looked the same. Apparently, the last thing I should do is look to see what my friends are up to on social media!
And then there’s AI. It’s so easy to find endless answers, to spell-check everything in two seconds. Voila! It frees up more time for us to scroll. Two-second memes of AI monkeys dancing to the most annoying AI music that literally sets this almost 60-year-old woman’s brain on fire. Read more via link in my bio
