Stress can directly affect how your gut moves, digests, and even “cleans up” between meals. When stress is high, your body shifts into fight-or-flight mode, and resources are diverted away from digestion.
One key process that gets disrupted is the migrating motor complex (MMC) which is your gut’s natural “housekeeping wave” that sweeps through the small intestine between meals.
When this rhythm is interrupted, symptoms like bloating, fullness, and irregular bowel habits can become more noticeable.
Strategies that may help calm the gut–brain axis:
- Meditation or breathwork
- ILU abdominal massage
- Gut-directed hypnotherapy (e.g. Nerva)
- Regular meal spacing (reducing constant grazing where possible)
- Supporting sleep and recovery
