Assessing the body as a whole, and treatments that target the root cause are key to getting lasting results.

Our Chiropractic method, Advanced Bio-Structural Correction™ (ABC™) is a hands on therapy that corrects spinal alignment and posture.

ABC is a therapy that looks at the body as a whole and not just individual parts operating separately from each other. By acknowledging that the body is a single, whole functioning unit, we can get to the root of your body issues and truly correct them while preventing issues from developing in the future.

Correcting your structural alignment from top to bottom takes pressure off the muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves in your back. Removing these pressures helps the body to heal naturally.

ABC™ consists broadly of maneuvers such as spinal stretches, hands on adjustments of the spine, ribs, and lower extremities which result in consistent and predictable results in postural correction.

Correcting your spinal alignment with Advanced Bio-Structural Correction™ helps you get real and immediate relief from neck pain, as well as preventing the problem from returning in the future.

MIGRAINES Understanding Trigger Foods

Some foods that are considered possible migraine triggers include:⠀
Wine, alcohol, sulphites (common preservative in wines and meats), chocolate, dairy, sugar.⠀

These foods can cause inflammation, which may disturb the Gut-Brain Axis, triggering an immune response that brings on a migraine.
⠀
The best way to figure out what is impacting your migraines is to complete a detailed diary (discussed in previous post). An elimination diet, with the help of a nutritionist or naturopath will also help to identify trigger foods, and then create a nutrition plan to help combat this. ⠀

Healing the gut can also be a holistic way to support your body through migraines, especially if food is a trigger for you.
⠀
Treatment for migraine will often require coming at the issue from many different angles, as there can be multiple factors that cause migraines. ⠀
⠀
It’s best to utilise a great team of health professionals that can collaborate with you to achieve your goals. Consider a GP, Naturopath or Nutritionist, Chiropractor, Masseuse to begin. ⠀
Find people who work best for you. ⠀

MIGRAINE

The first step to managing migraines is to source the root of the problem.

Most practitioners will ask you what your triggers are. Gathering data is a really important step to helping the management of migraines.

Tracking your migraine:⠀
⠀
I often recommend patients keep a “migraine diary” and keep a record of:⠀
- Exercise⠀
- Diet⠀
- Hydration⠀
- Menstrual cycle⠀
- Weather patterns⠀
- Caffeine & alcohol intake⠀
- Pain patterns⠀
- Prodrome symptoms⠀
- Digestion⠀
- Stress⠀
- Any medication use⠀
⠀
It is important to get to the root cause.⠀

What is happening in the anatomy and physiology of a migraine:

A migraine likely starts when overactive nerve cells send out signals that trigger your trigeminal nerve, which gives the sensation to your head and face.⠀

As pictured, the trigeminal nerve has 3 branches, for the upper, middle and lower portions of the head and face.
⠀
This causes your body to release chemicals like serotonin and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). CGRP makes blood vessels in the lining of your brain swell.⠀
⠀
Then, neurotransmitters cause inflammation and pain. ⠀
⠀
There is a strong relationship between the head, neck and trigeminal nerve.

This nerve has 3 pathways; Ophthalmic, Maxillary and Mandibular.⠀

Which explains my some people have jaw tension, eye weeping/tearing, visual symptoms, change in smell. These symptoms should be temporary and only last a few hours to days.
⠀

The elusive migraine cause… Like many issues of the body: there is no single cause. ⠀
However, people have certain triggers:⠀
- Nervous system dysregulation⠀
- Genetics⠀
- Fatigue⠀
- Bright lights⠀
- Hormone changes (especially women)⠀
- Weather/season changes⠀
- Inflammatory foods⠀
- Fragrance (especially synthetic)

Finding your triggers is the first step towards managing migraines.

Migraine Attack⠀
(The pain component)⠀
Lasts 4-72 hours if untreated. Migraines might occur rarely or strike several times a month.⠀
⠀
During a migraine, you might have:⠀
- Pain usually on one side of your head⠀
- Pain is throbbing or pulsing⠀
- Sensitivity to light, sound and sometimes smell and touch⠀
- Nausea and vomiting⠀
⠀
Post-drome⠀
After a migraine attack, it’s common to feel drained, confused and washed out for up to a day.⠀
⠀
Some people report feeling elated after relief.⠀
⠀
Sudden head and neck movement might bring on the pain again briefly. There may be tenderness in muscles, scalp and neck.⠀

Migraine Aura⠀

A visual disturbance that might occur before or during migraines.

They are reversible symptoms of the nervous system. Auras are usually visual, but can also include other disturbances. Each symptom usually begins gradually, builds up over several minutes and lasts for 20 to 60 minutes.⠀
⠀
Examples of migraine aura include:⠀
- Visual phenomena; seeing shapes, bright spots or flashes of light⠀
- Vision loss⠀
- Pins and needle sensations in an arm or leg⠀
- Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body⠀
- Difficulty speaking⠀
- Hearing noises or music⠀
- Uncontrollable jerking or other movements⠀

Performing a breast self exam:

Regular breast checks should be an important part of your self care routine. Set a reminder 2-3 months in your phone to perform a self breast exam. ⠀
⠀
Here’s how to do a self exam:⠀
⠀
SELF EXAM STANDING:⠀
Stand in front of a mirror, hands on hips and shoulders square. ⠀
A visual check of your breasts will help you to see:⠀
• the contours of your breasts⠀
• any changes to their usual shape and colour⠀
• any discharge from the ni**le⠀
• any redness, rash or swelling.⠀
Repeat again, with your arms raised in the air. ⠀
⠀
SELF EXAM LYING:⠀
Bend one elbow, and place your hand behind your head. Use your other hand, fingers together to gently feel your breasts. ⠀
Make sure you feel the entire breast area from your collarbone to your tummy, and include your armpits.⠀
⠀
Feel for: ⠀
• lumps⠀
• areas that are painful⠀
• skin that is dimpled or flattened⠀
• any feelings different from before.⠀
⠀
You should see your doctor about any changes in:⠀
• new lumps or feeling of lumpiness⠀
• shape of your breast⠀
• colour of your breast⠀
• the ni**le⠀
• discharge from the ni**le⠀
• puckering or dimpling of breast skin⠀
• any persistent breast pain⠀
• any persistent ni**le or breast itching or rash.⠀
⠀
If you detect a new lump, don't panic. ⠀
Research shows that 9 in 10 breast lumps are not cancer.⠀

Breast discomfort: ⠀
This is most commonly caused by menstruation, and changes in hormone levels. This can fluctuate throughout the month, and also with age. ⠀

Another factor can be lymphatic congestion, a build of fluid in the lymph nodes around the breasts, arms and collar bones. Lymphatic drainage massage, dry brushing and hydration can help.

However, there are some types of breast pain that should be checked by your doctor. ⠀
⠀
When to see your doctor: ⠀
- New lumps⠀
- New lumpiness⠀
- Changes in the shape of your breast⠀
- Changes in the colour of your breast⠀
- Changes in the ni**le⠀
- Discharge from the ni**le⠀
- Puckering or dimpling of breast skin⠀
- Any persistent breast pain⠀
- Any persistent ni**le or breast itching or rash.⠀

When is low back pain an emergency?

Get medical attention immediately if:⠀
⠀
- A fall, accident or other injury triggered the low back pain, to rule out fractures or serious injury.⠀
- You can't put any weight on your hips or legs⠀
- You can't move your leg/s ⠀
- You have lost sensation or have numbness in your body, especially legs or low back⠀
- There is fever present with low back pain ⠀
- If there is redness/warmth/swelling in the low back that may indicate an infection

Chiropractors are primary health care practitioners, this means we can refer you on for X-rays or other medical attention, if our tests show that something serious is happening that requires intervention.⠀

Low Back problems can have many causes, relating to work, sport and lifestyle issues, injuries, diseases such as arthritis, disc disease and osteoporosis. ⠀
⠀
Sometimes back pain is the result of a health condition beyond the spine such as a kidney stone or shingles.⠀

However, the most common cause we see in clinic is misalignment of the lumbar vertebrae.

This can stem from footwear issues, gait/walk, hips and sacrum imbalances and more.

Thankfully, spinal misalignment is our specialty and we are able to diagnose and treat this quickly.
⠀
Factors that may increase the risk of developing back problems include age, physical fitness, smoking, being overweight, and the type of work a person does (ABS 2019).⠀

LOW BACK PAIN SYMPTOMS 🌸

Depending on the cause, lower back pain can occur suddenly or slowly, even in the case of an injury, symptoms can take time to set in.⠀
⠀
Symptoms may include: ⠀
- Sharp localised pain⠀
- Catching sensation on movements⠀
- Broad dull ache⠀
- Stiffness⠀
- Muscle spasms⠀
- Tightness in the glutes or quadratus lumborum ⠀
- Pain can radiate down into the buttock, leg, or foot. ⠀
⠀
There might also be tingling, numbness, pins and needles and even weakness.⠀
⠀
More serious causes of low back pain include infection or fracture of the spine. We’ll discuss this below. If there is an infection, the area may also be red, swollen and warm with possible fever present. ⠀

Almost everyone has had low back pain at some point. It affects about 80% of adults at one time or another, some people have chronic ongoing pain, others have flare ups that may last hours to weeks.⠀
⠀
It is a very common complaint that we see in our clinic. Lower back pain is the leading reason that people take sick days off work, and disability in Australia.⠀
⠀
Low back pain can come on suddenly, or gradually over time. ⠀
⠀
We have a few categories for how long an issue has been present for. ⠀
⠀
Acute: short term up to 4 weeks⠀
Sub acute: 4-12 weeks⠀
Chronic: 3 months or longer⠀
⠀
This doesn’t indicate the severity of the symptoms. Pain can range from niggling/mild through to severe and debilitating. We often ask patients to rate their pain on a scale of 1-10 (1 being very mild, 10 being the worst pain imaginable).⠀
⠀
Using a pain scale helps us to track progress throughout treatment. ⠀

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints that Chiropractors assess and treat. ⠀
⠀
Firstly, let’s discuss the anatomy of the lower back so that we can talk about the mechanics of it, a bit later on. ⠀
⠀
The lower back is a large area that includes spinal cord, hips, sacrum, spine, discs between vertebrae, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. ⠀
⠀
These parts of the lower back all work seamlessly together like components of a complex piece of machinery. However, if one part is faulty, the whole system can be affected and malfunction (read: produce pain and symptoms).⠀
⠀
The precise location of the lower back pain and associated symptoms can provide valuable clues about the underlying cause.⠀

Pregnancy Chiro 💫
Along with pelvic alignment, gentle adjustments and realignments, your Chiropractor may also do some soft tissue release work, through the diaphragm, stomach, hip flexors and round ligament to open up the pelvis and release tension that is caused by weight of baby in the abdomen.⠀
