Many of our distressing responses to situations involve using unhelpful thinking styles that distort our interpretation of reality. Catastrophising is a thinking style which involves blowing things out of proportion and thinking things are worse than they are. E.g. You drop your spoon on the floor by accident and slam the table with you fist in anger, even though you could just grab another spoon and wash the spoon you dropped, which is a minor irritation.
