Are you living with a chronic condition, injury or persistent pain? Or do you need help making a behaviour change to increase your physical activity levels?

If you want to make a change and take charge of your health, it might be time to see an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

For a long time now, we've known that being physically active can reduce your risk of developing many types of cancer. Now, more and more research is showing how vital exercise is as a part of cancer treatment.

A new study has shown that myokines (proteins secreted into our blood when we exercise) can suppress tumor growth and even help actively fight cancerous cells.

In the study, patients with prostate cancer did 12 weeks of regular exercise, giving blood samples before and after the exercise program. Researchers then took the blood samples and applied them directly onto living prostate cancer cells.

“When we took their pre-exercise blood and their post-exercise blood and placed it over living prostate cancer cells, we saw a significant suppression of the growth of those cells from the post-training blood.

“That’s quite substantial indicating chronic exercise creates a cancer suppressive environment in the body” said the study supervisor, Professor Robert Newton.

Featuring yours truly. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be able to do what I love. That is supporting people to thrive at often the most difficult time in their life, giving them confidence and their life back. It is so rewarding to be able to be a part of a process where a person's physical and mental well-being is made a priority, not just their cancer treatment.

We are living in a time where the value of exercise is changing, it is now being brought to the forefront in preventing and managing many health conditions alongside other medical interventions. Exercise is giving people the power to control their own health, this is overall a strong benefit to the health system by reducing visits to the GP, hospital admissions, length of stay and most importantly improving the health of Australians! Healthier and improved quality of life drives positive social change.

Visit Exercise is Medicine Australia for some quality information!

As an exercise physiologist, K**a prescribes clinical exercise interventions for patients with a broad range of health conditions to prevent or manage disease or injury and to optimise a person’s physical function and mental health.

Research indicates that those who have been prescribed a supervised exercise intervention are more likely to adhere to their exercise regime and have better health outcomes than those who are given a self-paced program or guidelines to follow. Simply telling someone to walk 30 minutes per day is simply not enough and is not a personalised prescription!

Therefore, at Control Physio, we run several group exercise sessions in our clinic gym that patients can attend to complete their tailored exercise program to allow exercise medicine to work, all in a supportive environment.

If you would like to join our sessions, you need to have an initial consultation, you can talk to your GP as you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, or private health rebates may also apply.

Exercise is not just about controlling weight when it comes to risk factors for disease. It is much more than that, it changes our internal physiological milieu and research is getting closer to determining the mechanisms that provide a protective effect against certain cancers. Here is another one to add to the research basket. Don't just scroll through...have a read!

New research finds that exercise releases molecules including small proteins into the bloodstream that may slow the growth of cancer cells.

Exercise-induced myokines and their effect on prostate cancer❗

Exercise is recognised by clinicians in the field of clinical oncology for its potential role in reducing the risk of certain cancers and in reducing the risk of disease recurrence and progression; yet, the underlying mechanisms behind this reduction in risk are not fully understood.

A recent study found that exercise improves clinical outcomes in patients with cancer. Preclinical studies suggest the involvement of myokines in exercise-induced tumour suppression. Multiple studies have demonstrated the potential of myokines, such as oncostatin M, secreted protein acidic risk in cysteine (SPARC), irisin and decorin, in decreasing cancer cell proliferation, limiting migration and increasing apoptosis.
