MEDICAL IMAGING BOOST: Mammograms will be available for the first time at Cairns South Health Facility as part of a multi-million dollar boost to medical imaging in the Far North. ✨

As part of the Queensland Government’s $276 million investment in new diagnostic imaging technology, a new diagnostic imaging suite will be established at Cairns South and include:

✅A new mammography service, to help alleviate waiting times for the Far North’s women needing diagnostic scans in the public system
✅A second public MRI machine for the region
✅A third public CT scanner for Cairns

In the past two years alone, there has been a 23% increase in service demand for CT scans and a 49% increase in service demand for MRI scans across the Cairns health service.

Adding a second MRI and a third CT scanner in a new clinic offsite from the hospital will expand access for outpatients and community care.

The new diagnostic imaging suite at Cairns South Health Facility is expected to open in 2027.

ROLLING STONES: Surgeons at Cairns Hospital are leading the way with 'SpyGlass', a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure to remove gallstones, allowing most patients to go home the next day.

This keyhole surgery, championed by hospital surgeons (📸 L-R) Christian Beardsley, Esh Jeyarajan, and Omar Mouline reduces complications and improves patient recovery times.

With a high incidence of gallstone disease, especially among First Nations patients, the team performs four operations daily.

A diet low in fat, high in fiber, and rich in fruits, veggies, coffee, or tea can help prevent gallstones.
