Is it safe? That's a question that gets asked often in disability support.

But another question matters too. Is it living?

The NDIS talks about something called the dignity of risk. It recognises that people have the right to make choices, learn new skills, and try things for themselves, with the right supports in place.

Sometimes that looks like cooking a meal for the first time. Catching the bus. Joining a group. Doing something that feels a bit nerve-wracking at first.

Good support isn't about stopping every possible risk. 💚

It's about helping people build confidence while making sure the right safeguards are in place.

Navigating the NDIS can be confusing. It's okay to:

❓ Ask the same question twice
❓ Request things in writing
❓ Take time to think about decisions
❓ Change your mind about providers
❓ Speak up when something doesn't feel right

Your questions aren't a bother. Your concerns are valid. And you deserve support that makes sense for you and your family.

We're here for support when you need us 💚

What is an I-CAN assessment?

You may start hearing more about I-CAN as part of upcoming changes to NDIS planning.

The I-CAN assessment is a new conversation-based assessment the NDIA plans to introduce from mid-2026 to better understand a person's everyday support needs.

Instead of focusing on diagnosis, the assessment looks at how disability impacts daily life, including things like:

💚 Personal care
💚 Communication
💚 Getting around safely
💚 Social and community participation
💚 Everyday independence

The goal is to create a more consistent way of understanding support needs across Australia.

We know everyone's situation is different, especially here in Far North Queensland where distance, service availability and community access can all affect how support works in real life.

As these changes roll out, clear examples of day-to-day support needs will become more important than ever.

Peppermint Lane is keeping across these updates so participants and families feel informed, supported and prepared.

💬 Have questions about what this means for you or your plan? Send us a message. We're happy to chat.

If you've ever felt frustrated by how NDIS planning works, here's your chance to actually be heard.

The government is asking for feedback on proposed changes to NDIS planning rules, and you can be involved!

These changes could affect how NDIS plans are created, how supports are assessed, and how funding decisions get made. It's the kind of thing that has real impact on how participants, families, and support workers navigate the system day to day.

If you're living this (as a participant, family member, carer, support worker, therapist, or advocate), your perspective matters. You know what actually works, what doesn't, and what gets overlooked when policies are written without input from people on the ground.

The consultation closes 6 March 2026, so there's still a bit of time.

You can make a submission here: https://consultations.health.gov.au/ndis/nfp-public-consultation/

We know the NDIS can already feel overwhelming, and the idea of making a submission might sound intimidating. But you don't need to write something formal or use policy language. Just share what you know from where you stand. What does good planning look like? What are you concerned about? What needs to be protected?

Your voice helps shape what comes next, and we think it's worth being part of the conversation. 💚

Meet Danny 💚

Danny's been a support worker for over 12 years. He's the person who knows how to turn a tricky moment into a manageable one, and a regular day into one worth remembering.

He's worked across programs, community outings, home support, personal care, 1:1 and group supports. That range matters because it means he can read the room, adapt on the fly, and meet you where you actually are (not where a care plan assumes you should be).

When he's not working, Danny's in Speewah with his four German Shepherds (yes, four!!). He loves gardening, swimming, beach days, walks, bowling, and horse riding. If you've got animals, want to get outside, or you're curious about trying something new and active, Danny's here to support you!

He's got his Certificate III in Assistant Nursing, all the right qualifications, and availability on weekdays and weekends.

If you'd like to meet Danny or find out if he's a good fit for your supports, send us a message.

The new NDIS planning system is designed to focus more on conversations about your daily life.

For some people, that works well. They can explain their needs clearly and feel understood.

But if you live with complex, invisible, or fluctuating conditions, one conversation might not show the full picture.

That’s where specialist reports can still help.
They act as supporting evidence, not the whole case.

So the real question is:

“What helps my plan reflect my actual life?”

For some, it’s self-advocacy.
For others, it’s documentation.
For many, it’s both.

Our role as your Support Coordinator is to help you figure out what works best for you.

Because the goal is always the same… a plan that genuinely supports your life. 💚

🚻 Did you know there’s a key that unlocks accessible public toilets all across Australia?

It’s called an MLAK – Master Locksmiths Access Key and anyone in Australia living with a disability can apply for one.

Many accessible toilets in parks, BBQ areas and public spaces are kept locked to prevent misuse. But if you hold an MLAK key, you can access these facilities whenever you need. No hunting for staff. No waiting around.

You can apply for one free through Cairns Regional Council 👏
Here: https://cairnsregionalcouncil.snapforms.com.au/form/mlak-key-application

At Peppermint Lane, we know community access isn’t just about getting out of the house. It’s about feeling comfortable, prepared and supported while you’re out there.

If you’d like support to get out and about more confidently, our team is always here to help 💚

Meet Kat, our Client Liaison Officer 💚

Kat's the person who welcomes new participants to Peppermint Lane and makes sure everything is set up to work for you. She handles intake, coordinates service agreements, and tailors our services to match what you actually need.

She's been with us for 19 months, working across cleaning, support work, and admin before stepping into this role. With 5 years in disability support and a lifetime in Cairns, Kat brings lived experience to her work. As someone living with disabilities herself, she's passionate about helping participants find ways to make everyday tasks easier and less stressful.

"My passion is to help people become as independent as they can be, so they can live a fulfilling and independent life."

When she's not coordinating services and supporting new clients, you'll find Kat with her family, working on a jigsaw puzzle, or diving into her latest craft project.

Kat's here to make sure joining Peppermint Lane feels easy and supportive 💚

Mid-2026, the NDIS planning process changes. And we know it's bringing up a lot of questions.

So let's talk about what's actually happening. 💚

The shift: conversation over paperwork.

You'll have a Support Needs Assessment - a conversation with a trained assessor about your daily life. What's hard? What help makes a difference? What are you working toward?

The idea is to build plans around your real world, not just your diagnosis.

What people are asking us:

"Will my current plan disappear?"
No. Your plan stays valid. Changes happen gradually when you're due for review.

"What if I struggle to explain my needs in conversation?"
That's a real concern, and it's valid. Specialist reports can still be part of your planning. The difference is they'll support your story instead of being the whole story.

"Is this just about cutting costs?"
The stated goal is fairness and consistency. We'll be watching how it plays out in practice, and we'll be here to help you navigate it either way.

What you can do now:
Start keeping simple notes about your daily life. Not formal reports - just what's working, what's not. Practice talking about your needs in your own words.

And if you're feeling overwhelmed by all this? That's what we're here for. Helping you prepare for planning conversations and transitions like this is part of what Support Coordination does.

You don't have to figure this out alone. 💚
