Decmber 1st is the designated day for World AIDS Day Australia. This post is dedicated to help spread awareness and provide factual information about AIDS. Together we can help end the stigma around this conversation! ๐Ÿ˜„

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a condition that can cause AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV and AIDS are not the same thing.

Left untreated, HIV attacks the bodyโ€™s immune system making the body vulnerable to infections and medical conditions that the immune system would be normally capable of controlling. People who have newly acquired HIV can experience flu like symptoms, but others do not notice any symptoms for many years.

HIV is not an air-borne virus such as the flu. It cannot be passed on by hugging, kissing, shaking hands, coughing or sneezing, nor can it be transmitted through sharing toilets, washing facilities, eating utensils or consuming food and beverages handled by someone who has HIV.

Here are some ways you can help prevent HIV transmission!

1: Practice safer s*x. you can do this by asking your GP about options to do so.๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿฉบ

2: Sharing needles and personal care items (e.g. razors) can increase the risk of HIV being transmitted through blood ๐Ÿ’‰

3: The only way to know if you have HIV is through HIV testing. Testing is easy and free of charge in most health facilities. An HIV test is carried out by taking blood from a finger or arm, or by using an oral swab. ๐Ÿงช

HIV does not discriminate, people do. Stigma and discrimination will continue to exist so long as societies as a whole continue to judge people with HIV. You can help change this by gaining a better understanding of HIV and encouraging others to learn too.

Reduce the stigma by talking about HIV.๐ŸŽˆ

October is month! to mark the start of breast cancer awareness month this year we have dedicated this post to help spread awareness for those affected by breast cancer and to help educate women and men of the risks associated with breast cancer.

Did you know that many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional screening? some symptoms can be caught early by being proactive about your breast health. one way to do this is by performing monthly breast self-exams. this way you will be able to more easily identify any changes in your breast.

See below for some of the symptoms to be on the look out for:

- A lump in the breast (Itโ€™s important to remember that all lumps should be investigated by a healthcare professional, but not all lumps are cancerous.)
- Ni**le tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area.
- Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the breast.

Most often, symptoms are not due to cancer, but any breast cancer symptom you notice should be investigated as soon as it is discovered. you should tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms so the problem can be diagnosed and treated.

contrary to popular belief men can in fact get breast cancer too, Although rare. a manโ€™s breast cells and tissue can still develop cancer. Even so, male breast cancer is very rare. Less than one percent of all breast cancer cases develop in men, and only one in a thousand men will ever be diagnosed with breast cancer.

if you or someone you know is experiencing any of the above symptoms book online or over the phone for an appointment with one of our amazing doctors!

Did you know Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men? In 2022, it is estimated that there will be a total of 3,507 deaths due to prostate cancer. Prostate cancer kills more men than breast cancer kills women.

Early prostate cancer rarely demonstrates symptoms. Even once the prostate cancer is advanced at the time of diagnosis, there may be no symptoms. Cancer Council Tasmania recommends that men get to know the symptoms of prostate cancer.

Take the small quiz below to see if you know the symptoms of prostate cancer and who or what can help you detect it!

Question 1: which of these is NOT a symptom of prostate cancer?

1: Frequent urination.
2: Discomfort or pain when sitting.
3: frequent headaches.
4: unexplained weight loss.

The answer is:

Frequent Headaches! ๐Ÿ˜“

Question 3: Which of the following options can help you if you suspect you might be at risk of prostate cancer?

1: prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test.
2: digital re**al examination (DRE).
3: a urinary tract specialist (urologist).
4: Referral to a specialist.

The answer is:

ALL of the above! โญ๏ธIf you are 40 or over or experiencing any of the symptoms above in question 1 talk to your GP about testing for prostate cancer.

Our doctors at Cairns GP Medical center can talk to you about testing for prostate cancer if you are at risk! book an appointment online today at: https://cairnsgp.com.au/.

This year for we at Cairns GP Medical Centre encourage all men over 50 years of age, or 40, if they have a family history of prostate cancer to talk to their GP about testing for prostate cancer, as part of their regular health check-up!

The month of September is awareness month.

Childhood cancer Awareness month raises awareness for Australian children aged under 15 affected by cancer. The Kids Cancer Project shines a spotlight on this devastating disease in September.

More children pass away from cancer than any other disease in this country. Statistics tell us that 3 children are diagnosed with cancer EVERY DAY! Around 750-800 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer every year and almost half of those diagnosed are only aged 0-4 years.

Unfortunately Government funding only stretches so far so it is vital the community step up to help fund the scientific research so urgently needed.
