Some of you might know about my love of running & last weekend I was lucky enough to tackle the …

I went into this race filled with doubt & tried to downgrade my entry to the half mara (unsuccessfully due to event capacity) so I had to toughen up & stick with the full 42.2km.

After a less than ideal prep this past month with battling influenza A & experiencing a flare up of tendinopathy in my hip I had to take a different approach & reset my race goals. Thankfully I have the most incredible coaches in Gen & Ryan Gregson who helped guide me through this process & backed me every step of the way.

Turning into the entrance of the screaming MCG towards that iconic finish line was filled with an overwhelming number of mixed emotions from relief, pride, disappointment, joy, exhaustion & more. It literally brought tears to my eyes as I thought of every single person who helped me achieve this moment & goal.

***42.195km marathon completed in my personal best time of: 3 hrs & 21mins.

Thankfully my nutrition was on point 😜
Perhaps I will share more with you soon regarding what a carb loading phase looks like & training your gut to handle those gels + fluids!

I’m excited for future races with so much more to come, new goals to aim for & hopefully seeing a few of your faces around the footpaths of Cairns.

Congrats to everyone who participated in this amazing event.

We are excited to offer the returning program, Nourish to Flourish: Teen Nutrition Essentials for Parents, following its success last year.

It is a comprehensive program designed to equip parents with the tools they need to guide their teens toward nourishing their bodies, building positive body image, and navigating diet culture on social media. As we know, adolescence is a crucial time for nutritional development, and parents play a pivotal role in fostering positive attitudes toward food and health. It is run by Emma Coleman, Senior Eating Disorder Dietitian at Nutrifocus in collaboration with headspace.

The Nourish to Flourish program covers four topics over four weeks starting 7th May. These include:
• Nutrition and growth
• Key nutrition for adolescents
• Diet culture and social media
• Creating a healthy relationship with food

Our program aims to create a supportive and educational environment where parents can ask questions, share experiences, and gain the knowledge necessary to promote their teens’ overall health.

———-Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is the sensory based avoidance, fear or restriction of certain foods, due to sensitivities to texture, smell, temperature, or appearance of the food.————

“As a relatively new diagnosis, I gained a better understanding of diagnostic criteria as well as the latest interventions for dietary management”

Do you relate to this diagnosis or suspect your child might be experiencing ARFID?

If so, you’re not alone & we would absolutely love to hear from you & support your personal nutrition journey towards optimal health.

Cairns Marathon… what a day! Just 2 weeks ago Lorinda nearly pulled out with injuries to her knee & feet that she wasn’t sure she could run through. Thankfully she has a stubborn determination & an amazing physio (Victoria ) & podiatrist (Alex ) who helped get her to the start line.

Lorinda - “I felt really good for the first 33km & stoked with my 5min/km pace. Things were starting to get tough out there over the next few km as I struggled to keep pace & the last 4km were pretty brutal. Definitely gave myself a few little pep talks towards the end! My cheer squad (aka Grant, Mum & Dad) also gave me a huge boost each lap 🙏🏼”

Crossing that finish line sure was an incredible feeling in a time of 3:37:38.

Overall: 55th
Female: 16th
Age Category: 4th

The put on an incredible event with something for everyone to get involved. We can’t wait for next year. Who is keen to join?

An exciting update has been made to avocados today after team announced the results of their recently re-tested avocado.

Avocado’s do contain polyols but not in the form of sorbitol like originally thought. Instead avocados contain a similar carbohydrate (sugar polyol) called ‘perseitol’.

What does this mean for those following a low FODMAP diet?…

You can increase your avocado intake up to 3 tbsp / meal. Hooray!
However, remain mindful as perseitol is likely to have similar effects in the gut to sorbitol & mannitol, so may be a symptom trigger for those with IBS & a sensitivity to polyols.

I would also use a different food to test in the reintroduction of sorbitol & complete a separate avocado (perseitol) challenge.

There has been a brilliant collaboration between & who have successfully campaigned for an overhaul to food and nutrition education in schools in 2024 & 2025.

We are excited to see the changes coming to help improve how young people view food & nutrition.

Our credentialed eating disorder specialised dietitian, Emma would love to see you if this is an area you would like further support for you & your family.

The most frequent comment I hear from all my clients… “I don’t drink enough water.”

Something that seems so simple proves to be a real challenge for many of us (yep, that includes me too!).

A good first step is knowing your personal fluid needs and setting a daily goal.

The formula I often use here in the tropics is: 35mL/kg body weight/day
e.g. a 65kg person will need (35mL x 65kg) = 2.3L/day
*If above 90kg and overweight – I often keep to a 3L/day baseline recommendation.

Note: You will need to increase this volume if out in this sweaty heat or exercising.

If this sounds like a struggle to achieve then consider my key tips below:
• Keep a reusable water bottle with you at ALL times. • • • Preferably one that will keep your water icy cold.
• Reconsider that 3rd cup of coffee (or tea) and replace with a glass of water.
• Serve meals with a glass of water (even if there is a cheeky wine or beer alongside this).
• Keep it interesting and infuse your water with flavour – I’m a big fan of sliced lemon / lime / orange / cucumber / crushed berries / mint.
• Add some bubbles to your life – sparkling mineral water / soda water can really help quench your thirst.
• Set reminders on your phone every 30mins to help you get in the habit of drinking regularly.
• Consider your flask – do you prefer a straw (🙋🏼‍♀️) pop lid, or chug cap?

If you’re still struggling, know you’re dehydrated or lost excess fluids via sweat (vomiting / diarrhoea) then add some electrolytes into your water (I tend to go for Hydralyte but there are other good options on the market).

The holiday season can be a difficult time with a stronger focus on food and dealing with that aunty (or mum or uncle or sister!) who keeps commenting on your weight.

With the New Year here, restrictive diets can be even more tempting during this time but we think it’s important to honour our bodies and allow ourselves to nourish them well.

If this is something you’re struggling with, our Dietitian Emma, is passionate about supporting people improve their relationship with food and moving away from dieting rules.
