It is with great excitement and some sadness that I announce closure of Emily Biggs Physiotherapy pending the birth of our 2nd child and baby boy in the coming weeks 💚🤍

With a second baby on the way our family has decided to take the plunge and move to Toowoomba to be closer to family later this year- a very exciting development for us personally.

I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank from the bottom of my heart all the patients who have supported my business over the last year or two. It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to be a part of your healing journey.

Appointments are still available for my last day which will be the 17th of April if needed, after which referral to my favorite Physios in Cairns will be arranged with full handover organized for you ☺️💚

Lots of love and appreciation,
Emily 🌿

Happy NAIDOC week! ❤️💛🖤

The theme of 2022 is ‘Get up, Stand up, Show up!’

The theme encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to continue to ‘amplify our voices and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome’.

As a part of my Master’s studies we are working on a piece of research that investigates ‘What are the opportunities to improve pelvic healthcare for Aboriginal Women and Men?’.

Our hopes are that through collaboration with Aboriginal Women and Men we can identify opportunities to help narrow the gap between good intent and outcomes in the area of pelvic health for Aboriginal Women and Men.

If you would like to learn more or contribute to the conversation I’d love to have a yarn and hear your story 🌿

After somewhat of a social media hiatus we are back and ready for bigger and more exciting things for 2022!

While January has been a difficult month for a lot of us with COVID finally making it’s debut in Cairns, now is a great time to remind ourselves of our own strength and bravery in what is an unprecedented and challenging time for all.

It is so easy to fall into an unhealthy body and mindset right now (I myself have been guilty of this lately) and as such it is so important for us to surround ourselves with people who bring positivity and joy in our lives and most importantly- give yourself a BREAK!

Emily Biggs Physiotherapy would like to thank it’s followers and patients for all the support this year so far and moving forward as we navigate this new norm together 💚

Moving into February we have so many exciting plans for our social media platforms including education and updates on our services, so watch this space! 😁

In the meantime we wish you all the strength, bravery and smarts to make it through the outbreak happy and well and look forward to better times ahead 🌿🌿

This year between the 7th – 13th November, we celebrate Perinatal Mental Health week.

Since 2005 PANDA has been leading the perinatal mental health sector in promoting the week to help our community better understand perinatal mental illness, including signs to look for and where to go to seek support. We’re excited to see more organisations getting involved and helping to progress this important conversation about perinatal mental health.
In the last 12 months, PANDA has seen:

51% increase in callers to PANDA's Helpline.
57% of callers are citing stressful life events as their reason for reaching out for help.
More pregnant callers reaching out for help
75% are either pregnant with their second or third child.
Significant increase in the number of callers with babies under 1 month of age (12% in 2019-20 to 26% in 2020-21).

Many may think the statistics are alarming, PANDA sees the increase in demand as positive progress, as it means more families in Australia are no longer trying to manage alone.

Most women Post-Partum are aware of their 6-week post-natal check with their doctor. However most aren’t aware of why they should be getting a 6-week post natal check with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist.

This is an extremely important step in regard to Mum’s recovery that often gets lost in the craziness of newborn life.

So why is this so important and what is involved in this check up?

Growing and birthing a tiny human is an intense and often times traumatic experience on a woman’s body and while things can appear to be fine, there are often underlying issues that can go undetected until they progress to a point of symptomatic. The idea behind this check is to flag these problems before they become an issue as at this stage they are generally much easier to treat in a non-invasive manner.

Generally these checks run for an hour and may include screening of:

1. General pelvic floor muscle check- looking at strength, endurance and coordination in addition to screening/treatment of any tearing or damage caused during delivery

2. Pelvic Organ Position- mild-moderate prolapse of pelvic organs is often asymptomatic. Identification is important as these can often worsen on return to exercise or later in life when oestrogen levels drop during menopause

3. C-Section recovery plan- if you have had a c-section, a plan to rehabilitate your muscle strength and help facilitate healing is extremely important to return to baseline

4. Abdominal screening- particularly for Re**us Diastasis and deep core activation retraining

5. Bladder and Bowel function- bladder and bowel function is frequently affected by birth and may be dysfunctional post-partum

6. Return to Exercise Plan- one-on-one tailored advice to your body and lifestyle to help you get back to activity post birth

And most importantly it is an opportunity to voice YOUR CONCERNS. Anything that doesn’t feel right or may have been missed amongst a very baby focussed post partum recovery will be listened to and met with advice given or referred to the appropriate channels so you can feel like your best self again.

Monday strikes again! 🌿

Hoping you all had great weekends and your heads aren’t suffering from the effects of one too many over the weekend 😉

While it is generally expected to be suffering from a headache after a few too many glasses of the good stuff, did you know that headaches can also be caused by dysfunction in your neck?

The upper 3 segments of the neck (cervical spine) and its surrounding structures are an extremely common source for headache and migraine symptoms such as head pain, nausea and visual sensitivity/blurring.

Through a thorough examination of the cervical spine to identify the source and the use of specialized techniques to effectively treat the source, your headaches CAN be managed long term.

If you have been suffering from ongoing headaches or migraines that do not seem to be going away with medication or there are no definitive findings from MRI/CT scans it is quite possible that your neck may be the issue (even in the absence of neck pain!).

For a complete assessment, call Emily on 0427332234 or send us a message.

Meet the Owner 🌿
Emily Biggs – Owner/Principal Physiotherapist

After a short break on maternity leave Emily is excited to be treating again in the Cairns community!

Emily completed her Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia in 2014 and been living in North Queensland ever since. Since then, Emily has undertaken extensive professional development all over Australia, learning from renowned Australian and international physiotherapists particularly in the areas of Pelvic/Women’s Health, Headaches and Clinical Pilates.

In the small amount of free time Emily has around chasing (or being chased after) her 7-month-old daughter Quinn, Emily can be found exercising, reading or enjoying time with her amazing little family either outdoors in the FNQ sunshine or at the local pub enjoying a good wine!

Emily specializes in treating a range of musculoskeletal conditions including but not limited to cervicogenic headaches, pelvic and spinal conditions, vertigo and chronic pain.
Her absolute passion however lies in treating Women’s Health conditions including Pre-and Post-partum rehabilitation and pain management, bladder and bowel conditions, prolapse, sexual dysfunction and other pelvic floor conditions.

Emily firmly believes in treating each patient as an individual and not just their clinical condition. Providing practical solutions and treatment options that address the patient’s specific goals and particular lifestyle as opposed to a one size fits all approach.

To book an appointment with Emily call 0427332234 today! 😀
