✨✨Autism is a neurotype — a natural variation in how the brain works, processes, and experiences the world. Some autistic people have extraordinary strengths. Some face significant challenges. Most live somewhere in between — just like anyone else. ✨✨

It’s time to move past extremes and stereotypes. Let’s honour autism for what it truly is: a valid, valuable way of being human.

They’re used to support mobility, communication, and everyday tasks, helping people participate in work, education, community life, and social activities—just like anyone else. Disability aids aren’t about limitation; they’re about creating opportunities, removing barriers, and ensuring everyone can live life on their terms. 💜💚🧡💛💙

Remember: using a disability aid is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s about accessing your full potential and being included in every part of life. Together, we can normalize support and make our communities truly accessible for all.

💚🧡 Inclusion is more than just letting someone be present, it’s about truly seeing them, valuing their voice, and creating spaces where they can fully participate and thrive. 💜💙 It’s about breaking down barriers, challenging assumptions, and embracing the idea that every person, no matter their ability, has something important to contribute. Inclusion is a mindset, a practice, and a promise to ensure everyone belongs. Together, we can build a world where differences aren’t just accepted, they’re celebrated. ✨

How to Support Your Friend with a Disabled Child:

Listen Without Judgment: Sometimes the best support is simply listening. Let them share challenges, joys, or frustrations without offering unsolicited advice.

Offer Practical Help: Tasks like cooking a meal, running errands, or babysitting siblings can ease daily stress. Be specific in your offers—“Can I drop off dinner on Wednesday?” works better than a general “Let me know if you need help.”

Educate Yourself: Learn about their child’s condition, therapies, or needs. Understanding the situation helps you provide informed and empathetic support.

Be Inclusive: Invite them and their child to activities, but don’t pressure them if participation isn’t feasible. Accessibility and flexibility matter.

Respect Boundaries: Every family’s situation is different. Respect their routines, privacy, and choices.

Celebrate Achievements: Recognize milestones, big or small. Positive encouragement goes a long way.

Avoid Comparisons: Every child develops differently. Avoid comparing their child to others—it can be unintentionally hurtful.

Check In Regularly: Consistent, genuine connection matters more than grand gestures. Even a short message asking how they’re doing can make a difference.

R U OK?

What is the meaning of R U OK Day?
R U OK? Day encourages responsible public discussion of social isolation and its negative consequences such as suicide. The key message is that social connectedness and positive help seeking can assist people in crisis and is a whole of community responsibility.

7 ways you can start a conversation & ask if someone is OK?

1. You seem a bit less chatty than usual. How are you travelling?
2. I need a coffee. Come with me?
3. You seemed distracted this morning. What’s on your mind mate?
4. What have you done in the past that’s been helpful?
5. How long have you felt this way?
6. How can I support you?
7. What’s something you can do just for yourself right now?

If your feeling down, please feel free to reach out. The people at A&K Support Services are always happy to lend a ear & a helping hand 💚🧡💙💛💜❤️

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

It’s a day to honour the memories of those we’ve lost to suicide and to offer support to those facing difficult times and those living with the grief of losing someone.

The message of ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’ encourages us to change how we talk about suicide. To replace silence and stigma for empathy, compassion and action.

We all have a role to play in staying connected, showing up for those we care about and helping those struggling access the support they need.

Show the people around you that you’re there for them by asking 'are you OK?'. Because a conversation could change a life.

💜💛💚🧡💙 Meet Holly-May, one of our exceptional Support Workers based in Cairns. 💜💛💚🧡💙
About Me as a Support Worker I am dedicated to empowering individuals to lead fulfilling lives, ensuring they feel genuinely heard and understood. Through personal and family experiences, I have cultivated patience, empathy, and resilience, recognizing the importance of kindness and authentic care. I find immense satisfaction in being a Support Worker, as it enables me to provide guidance, foster independence, and celebrate achievements of all proportions. I strive to create a secure environment where individuals can thrive, being their authentic selves and growing at their own pace. Outside of work, I enjoy camping, exploring creeks and beaches, gardening, and creating lasting memories with friends and family. As a family-oriented individual, I value hosting events that foster special moments. I also prioritize quiet time to recharge, ensuring I bring positivity and energy to my role. For me, this work transcends a profession; it embodies connection, respect, and empowering others to flourish.
