The Corpus Hermeticum
I. Poemandres, the Shepherd of Men
translated by G.R.S. Mead

(Only the first part of the text posted here)

Notes on the text: This is the most famous of the Hermetic documents, a revelation account describing a vision of the creation of the universe and the nature and fate of humanity. All Creation stories have also an aspect in which we create WITHIN ourselves.. back to a Unity with our interior Divinity

This Hermetic Creation Myth draws striking similarities to the biblical Genesis, with additional substance and Symbolism.

A key for understanding-
*Mind = Nous, Awareness of Divine Ocean
*Logos = The Creative Word/ The Father, Mother and Christ (son) Creatively within us
*The Sheppard man = The Cosmic Christ
*The elements also have a Symbolic and Alchemical reality of our internal Cosmology.

1. It chanced once on a time my mind was meditating on the things that are, my thought was raised to a great height, the senses of my body being held back - just as men who are weighed down with sleep after a fill of food, or from fatigue of body.

Methought a Being more than vast, in size beyond all bounds, called out my name and saith: What wouldst thou hear and see, and what hast thou in mind to learn and know?

2. And I do say: Who art thou?

He saith: I am Man-Shepherd (Poemandres), Mind of all-masterhood; I know what thou desirest and I am with thee everywhere.

3. [And] I reply: I long to learn the things that are, and comprehend their nature, and know God. This is, I said, what I desire to hear.

He answered back to me: Hold in thy mind all thou wouldst know, and I will teach thee.

4. Even with these words His aspect changed, and straightway, in the twinkling of an eye, all things were opened to me, and I see a Vision limitless, all things turned into Light - sweet, joyous [Light]. And I became transported as I gazed.

But in a little while Darkness came settling down on part [of it], awesome and gloomy, coiling in sinuous folds, so that methought it like unto a snake.

And then the Darkness changed into some sort of a Moist Nature, tossed about beyond all power of words, belching out smoke as from a fire, and groaning forth a wailing sound that beggars all description.

[And] after that an outcry inarticulate came forth from it, as though it were a Voice of Fire.

5. [Thereon] out of the Light [...] a Holy Word (Logos) descended on that Nature. And upwards to the height from the Moist Nature leaped forth pure Fire; light was it, swift and active too.

The Air, too, being light, followed after the Fire; from out of the Earth-and-Water rising up to Fire so that it seemed to hang therefrom.

But Earth-and-Water stayed so mingled with each other, that Earth from Water no one could discern. Yet were they moved to hear by reason of the Spirit-Word (Logos) pervading them.

6. Then saith to me Man-Shepherd: Didst understand this Vision what it means?

Nay; that shall I know, said I.

That Light, He said, am I, thy God, Mind, prior to Moist Nature which appeared from Darkness; the Light-Word (Logos) [that appeared] from Mind is Son of God.

What then? - say I.

Know that what sees in thee and hears is the Lord's Word (Logos); but Mind is Father-God. Not separate are they the one from other; just in their union [rather] is it Life consists.

Thanks be to Thee, I said.

So, understand the Light [He answered], and make friends with it.

7. And speaking thus He gazed for long into my eyes, so that I trembled at the look of him.

But when He raised His head, I see in Mind the Light, [but] now in Powers no man could number, and Cosmos grown beyond all bounds, and that the Fire was compassed round about by a most mighty Power, and [now] subdued had come unto a stand.

And when I saw these things I understood by reason of Man-Shepherd's Word (Logos).

8. But as I was in great astonishment, He saith to me again: Thou didst behold in Mind the Archetypal Form whose being is before beginning without end. Thus spake to me Man-Shepherd.

“The world of ignorance is governed by fear, hate, greed, and lust. In it wander men and women floating listlessly, to and fro, upon their passions only. Only when the human being realizes the spiritual verities of life does he then escape from this underworld... The sun of truth rises in the human being and illuminates his world when he lifts his mind from the darkness of ignorance and selfishness into the light of wisdom and altruism."

"It is necessary for the mind to become free of the illusions of this world and become a fine and marvelous instrument of the Inner Being."

The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal Name. The unnameable is the eternally real. Naming is the origin of all particular things. Free from desire, you realize the mystery. Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations. Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source. The source is called darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gateway to all understanding.

When people see things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see things as good, other things become bad. Being and non-being create each other. Difficult and easy support each other. Long and short define each other. High and low depend on each other. Before and after follow each other. Therefore, the master acts without doing anything and teaches without saying anything. Things arise and she lets them come; things disappear and she lets them go. She has but doesn’t possess, acts but doesn’t expect. When her work is done, she forgets it. That is why it lasts forever. - Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way).

“The alchemist realizes that he himself is the Philosopher’s Stone, and that this stone is made diamond-like when the salt and the sulphur, or the spirit and the body, are united through mercury, the link of mind. Man is the incarnated principle of mind as the animal is of emotion. He stands with one foot on the heavens and the other on earth. His higher being is lifted to the celestial spheres, but the lower man ties him to matter. Now the philosopher, building his sacred stone, is doing so by harmonizing his spirit and his body. The result is the Philosopher’s Stone. The hard knocks of life chip it away and facet it until it reflects lights from a million different angles.”

"Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and awake- it’s everything except what it is! "

-William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Shakespeare understood not only poetry but Alchemy.. internal transformation

Johfra’s Art of Gemini is pure alchemy as its central symbols are Sponsus (Bridegroom) and Sponsa (Bride). It is a depiction of an “alchemical wedding” – the joining of opposites to create unity. This creation of unity in alchemy is assisted by Mercurius, the archetype of the mind and the fundamental energy found between Men and Women.

This duality we experience in life from day to day, our highs and lows, we want this we don't want that, happiness and sadness, we like this person and not that person.. this duality exists within our mind.

The synthesis can only be Alchemically worked with the spiritual forces of Love within..

Jesus of Nazareth learned Mayan in Tibet. That phrase of Jesus’s, “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani,” some say it’s, “Lord, Lord, how you have glorified me.” Others say, “Lord, Lord, why have you forsaken me?” Well, that phrase is not Hebrew. That is why, when the Jews heard Christ say, “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani,” they asked themselves, “But this man is calling for Elijah, what language is this?” They did not understand; they thought he was calling for Elijah to come and save him. However, any indigenous person from Yucatán or Guatemala can translate the phrase, “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani” for you because, it just so happens that, it is Mayan—not Hebrew. That is why the Jews did not understand it. According to the Maya and the translation they give, it means, “I hide in the pre-dawn of your presence.” It is a Mayan ritual phrase.
“The True Origin of Man”

We have been told—and it is true—that Jesus of Nazareth, the Great Kabir, spoke Mayan. Remember that phrase, “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani,” the phrase that shone forth on Calvary. Many have translated it as, “Lord, Lord, why have you forsaken me?” A mistaken translation. H.P.B. said, “Lord, Lord, how you have glorified me.” That translation was mistaken too.

Any resident of Yucatán knows what that phrase means. “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani” means, “I hide in the pre-dawn of your presence.” Any Maya from Yucatán can translate it that way.

So, Jesus spoke Mayan. The Jews who saw the Christ crucified did not understand the phrase. They thought he was calling for Elijah the prophet and said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to deliver him.” And that’s because the Jews didn’t speak Mayan.

We can often confuse WHAT to think, with HOW to think..

"I looked in churches, mosques and temples, but I found the Divine within my heart. Gnosis lives in facts, withers away in abstractions, and is difficult to find even in the noblest of thoughts. God is to be found not in religion, not in systems but in discovering truth in every little thing."
