Acknowledge Their Strengths – by: Charisse Andrew
“Being part of a community like Apraxia Kids helps to not make it such a scary journey.”

Caidan’s parent, Charisse, not only describes their journey from diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech but also reminds us that CAS does not define Caidan as a person. Of course they overcome struggles due to his diagnosis, but you will be inspired by the positive messages shared by our Australian friends. Be inspired – read their story today!

The sandpit provides so many language learning opportunities. Sit with your child in the sand and join their play. Use words that describe what things look like, what they're doing and where things are. Meet your child where they're at and teach them what words mean, by showing them - fill your bucket and exclaim that it is full! Tip it out and tell them that it is empty. Make a big volcano and a small volcano and compare them. Drive cars fast and slow, make roads and drive the cars around the mountain, under the bridge or through the tunnel. Your child can learn so much by listening to you and pairing your words to the toys in their hands. Above all, have fun, because kids are most open to learning when they're relaxed and enjoying themselves.

Being able to identify the initial sound of words is one of the most important skills that will prepare children for literacy. This can be started in the year before a child begins Prep. When learning the alphabet, be sure to tell your child which sound each letter makes, and focus on working out which sound a word starts with, not just the letter.
