I was talking to someone at Soccer last night and they made a comment about how long it is since we have had rain.

It is not that long ago and I remember very clearly how the rain started in August 2010 and seemed to go on and on and on.

All too quickly we can forget how hard it rains when it really rains in Queensland. In periods of dryness we don't think about all the leaks that we had when it rains.

So as we come into the wet season, this weekend could be the time to clean out gutters, unblock drains, get rid of any dry leaves and grass so you are prepared if and when the rain comes.

By doing this you will avoid any build up of water that can cause damage when it does rain.

And of course, should you find during all that maintenance you might carry out this weekend, that you do have a waterproofing issue, then it is always best to seek the services of a professional and get their advice.

No harm done if it ends up being something small that you can do yourself. But in the event that it is not, always better to bring in a professional to do the job.

I don't know what anyone else in the construction industry thinks, but we have not seen so many residential apartment blocks, townhouses and aged care tenders around for about three or four years.

We hope this is a great sign that things have turned the corner in the construction industry. Every time it has felt like this over the last two to three years, it was short lived.

This is a good sign for 2015 and does not appear to be restricted to Brisbane, there is a fair bit of movement of the Sunshine Coast as well.

How has the construction industry changed for everyone since the global financial crisis?

You know how I showed you the machine that we use to remove carpet underlay and adhesive yesterday on our video, I forgot to show you photos of how revolting the floor is when we start and how clean it looks after we finish.

So today I have posted the before and after photos. The after photo still has the left hand back corner to finish. This shows clearly te difference after we have completed the works.

It is a short post today because it is Friday. Nothing too taxing on the brain.

The rain is nice on the Sunshine Coast but is playing havoc with a great polished concrete job we are doing for Nu Trend Homes at Burnside.

The upside is that the rain is keeping the concrete wet as it was only poured on Tuesday. Less cracking in the concrete if the slab is kept wet during curing. There is always an upside.

Have a great weekend. See you all here next week on Monday.

Oh! And go U12 Currimundi Barracudas v Mooloola Strikers. Currimundi need to win tomorrow so that they are guaranteed a place in the finals next week. (Or the rain may just help us, if it really pours and we can't play tomorrow, I believe that we are a shoe in for the finals then.)

Either way everybody stay safe until next week.

Commercial premises need to be reinstated back to their original condition when handed back to the landlord at the end of a lease.

Last week we told you about additional services that we provide.

Another service is the removal of carpet or vinyl and the adhesive left after it is removed.

Sometimes the underlay does not come up all that well and there is specialist equipment required to remove it.

The attached video shows the removal of carpet underlay and adhesive being removed easily with the right equipment.

Usually you will need to grind the floor as well as strip it like in the video.

Kadoe removes waste wisely!

On big construction sites a curing compound is used on concrete pours to keep the moisture in the slab and not let it dry out too quickly. It is like a membrane sprayed onto the surface as the concrete is drying.

Some curing compounds are acrylic. Others have a resin base.

When some coatings are installed the curing compound needs to be removed first otherwise they won't stick to the surface. The resin based ones can be removed either by grinding or chemical removal.

When it is removed by chemical the waste water needs to be removed and disposed of in licensed waste disposal facilities for this type of waste.

We have adapted a wet dry vacuum to extract the waste from the waste water tanks on the scrubbers we use to ensure that there is no likelihood of spillage.

The waste water is then stored in plastic storage tanks and removed by a licensed contractor.

With our "no grind" polished concrete the application of curing compound is not necessary but the Australian Standards only recognise certain products as curing compounds and coatings do not fit into this category.

Despite all of that it is just better If the waste is removed sensibly so nature cannot be affected adversely.

Everybody's office is different.....

Every workplace has a different environment to work in.

On reminiscing about where we have worked, the office space for Kadoe is different everyday.

One particular site was on North Stradbroke Island. The only way on to the island is by ferry.

The Kadoe moving billboard (aka lime green commodore) was driven on to the barge.

The job on the island was waterproofing the internal wet areas of two homes.

The picture from the front of the house is as good as that on the ride across.

Some day's are harder than others, but this 3 days was heavenly!

RIP Robin Williams. A very sad day. He brought so much laughter and entertainment to so many.

As it has been reported today, he may have died from su***de. This got us thinking about Mates in Construction who do so much in our industry to prevent and inform us all about su***de.

The world is a bit crazy at the minute but organisations like Mates in Construction are doing everything in their power to prevent this in the future by educating and informing everyone in Construction about how to recognise the signs and how it can be prevented.

Not everything old needs to be replaced.

Our friends at Fuz Hair Moffat Beach, asked us to install polished concrete in their salon fit out.

When we inspected it, it was covered with existing floor coverings and we were unable to inspect the concrete surface.

This shop would be at a guess about 20 years old. When the floor coverings were removed the aged concrete had large cracks in it.

Each of the cracks were cleaned out and repaired prior to the concrete polishing. With the product that was used on this floor the repairs are trapped below the surface, ensuring that they can't degrade with use.

If you are polishing old concrete then these repairs will be visible. They give an aged, industrial feel. But you need to be sure that this is the look you could live with if you leave the concrete exposed.

The system that we used in Fuz to polish the concrete was Kadoe's own KaDazzled system, that was developed after a construction manager let us know that there was an issue with polished concrete in liquor outlets, where the alcohol was penetrating the current specified sealer.

We can proudly report that Fuz have had this system installed now for 12 months. KaDazzled has proven excellent in a hairdressing salon, and the coating used has not stained with hair dyes or anything.

So you can go to Fuz, have your hair dyed whilst enjoying a glass of red wine, and if either are spilt on the floor, the floor is protected from both problematic products.

Remember yesterday we said that we were going to introduce you to the other services Kadoe provide, one each day this week.

So today's profiled service is dustless diamond grinding.

Yesterday we introduced you to our service of tile removal. I posted photos of the tiles before and during removal.

Today we have attached a photo of the same floor being ground. We have different size grinders for different size jobs.

The project in the photos yesterday and today is the Organika Store in Noosaville. We removed the tiles, ground the floor to expose aggregate for a polished concrete finish.

Whether removing tile or carpet adhesive and grinding to expose aggregate the processes are similar. The difference is the type and size of diamond tooling used on the grinders. There are specific diamond tooling for specific purposes.

You need to grind after tile or carpet removal to remove all the tile glue left over and still stuck to the concrete.

This process can also be used to remove existing coatings like epoxy and concrete sealers. Spillages of paint that has not been cleaned up prior to it drying can also be removed this way.

I was with a friend the other day when I introduced myself as Carolyn from Kadoe. When asked what Kadoe does I answered waterproofing, polished concrete and epoxy,

My friend Rob Montanez, stopped and said but what about everything else that you do. So this week each day I will add one more thing that we do, that you may not be aware that we do.

Today it is tile removal. Tile removal needs to be done sensitively especially if there are new floor coverings to replace it. Or even worse polished concrete replaces the tiles.

If removed with a jack hammer and by someone inexperienced, then big holes and craters can be left behind, causing another expense to repair. If you want to have polished concrete installed then there is nowhere for these repairs to hide. Polished concrete is like a n**e colour sheer silk stocking for floors.

Home renovators, by the time you hire equipment to remove them it may not be as cheap as having a professional remove them.

You may remember early last week we posted about "upcycling" and the reception desk being made out of the concrete, which was cut out to make a void between floors in an office building.

Everyone has been asking how it is going, and what material was used to construct it.

Today we have posted a photo of the concrete before it was installed. We have also posted one after the concrete was put in place and another one with the first coats of polyurethane.

The concrete has not been made to look brand new. It has only been refurbished. The integrity of the aged look of the concrete has been left intact.

Concrete can be sourced from a lot of commercial construction demolition sites, just like this was and just like someone would think to recycle timber from unusual or well known landmarks.

Of course, Kadoe then have the skills to repair, bevel the edges and polish it.

Kadoe is doing some exciting design work at the moment for a variety of commercial and domestic clients.

These samples have proven extremely difficult to photograph as they have a high gloss. Every time we tried to take them we could see our reflection in the sample.

This is just to wet your appetite. We will have other samples done next week and will post them then.

These are samples for floors. But we are working with one client at the moment to come up with the floor design and then the kitchen splashback to match.

The designs will be done to individual requirements so they will be unique to each client. No two will ever be the same.

They are also cost competitive.

They look better in real life. For a sneak peek at these you can contact me at sales@kadoe.com.au.

All that shines is not gold!

Sometimes it is polished concrete.

Today we have featured polished concrete in a domestic situation. Polished concrete is perfect for your home. No more grout lines to keep clean. Durable. easily restored to new and a breeze to keep clean.

This finish is what is called a 50/50 finish with 50% of the surface revealing the aggregate in the concrete.

You can have salt and pepper finish with just a fleck here and there.
Or the surface does not have to be ground.

Can be used in a new build or a renovation.

Petrol resistant coatings. Not just for service stations. Suitable for Men's Sheds, Man Caves, rural machinery sheds, plant rooms, home garages. In fact anywhere a machine or car or truck or machinery is parked or housed.

It is a cost effective option to cover and protect n**e concrete.

Can you guess who our client was on this project?

Anti Slip surfaces for commercial kitchens. Vinyl flake floors are excellent for this installation at Marjana Mediterranean Restaurant & Cafe at Northlakes. The colour that was chosen was Oatmeal, but there is an extensive range that even looks like marble if required.

Epoxy coving is installed into arrowhead strips so that dirt cannot enter behind the coving for health reasons.

Then the vinyl flakes floor installed and the epoxy coves coloured to match the floor.

East to keep clean and anti slip into the bargain. Longevity in a commercial kitchen is guaranteed.

Do you know anyone that would be interested in this type of flooring?

I guess everyone has heard of "upcycling". According to Wikipedia upcycling "is the process of converting waste material" into products of better quality or for better environmental value.

In this current project, a concrete floor has been removed between two floors in an office high rise to create a void . The concrete that was cut out has been cut to lengths for an office desk.

Kadoe has been contracted to repair the concrete, bevell the edges and polish it.. This photo posted today is the cut concrete being installed prior to Kadoe weaving its magic.

Can you think of other uses where concrete could be used to upcycle?
