Happy International Day of the Midwife ✨️

On this International Midwives Day, I think about the many transformational moments in my life professionally as a midwife and personally being so warmly supported by some incredibly beautiful midwives with my own birth experiences.

There is just SO much love I have for all things midwifery and the reason I started private work, prioritising women's needs and truly supporting their education.
Also, for my own needs as a midwife, as wife and a mother.

However, as I continue to reflect each year on my role in the public system, whilst it gets harder in some ways to keep going, it is also so easy to continue with each AMAZING midwife I meet and learn from. Every day, my current team supports women in such a beautiful way, advocating and striving to be the light in a broken system.

The midwifery crisis HAS to be fixed and I have not lost faith that it will be.

Midwives deserve better.
Women deserve better.
Babies deserve better.

Midwives make a difference.

Midwives truly matter.

Continuity of care is always the desirable option for pregnancy, especially with a midwife.

Coming soon, you can have the education and continuity you deserve whilst building your community with other women.

Gaining knowledge in pregnancy helps you be confident and prepared to advocate for yourself.

Your support team should lift you up and have your back, and your belly 😉 no matter what...

Birth is not the time to make choices based on someone else's happiness or wishes.

The only people in your birth space should be the ones you want..

This little shout-out today is for everyone, but especially for a few women who have discussed this topic with me recently...

Not who your partner wants!
And certainly not because your mother thinks she is entitled to be there!

If you are uncomfortable, your mind-body connection is disrupted, and this means the optimal hormones for birth can't work as well for you.

It's OK to change your mind!

Come and join me for Calmbirth and learn more about the mind-body connection during birth ✨️

Calmbirth® – Prepares you emotionally, mentally, and physically for birth✨️

Calmbirth® was the first childbirth education program in Australia to recognise the interrelationship between the mind and body connection in birth – the connection and power between a woman’s emotional state and the way her body responds in birth.

The program is suitable for first-time parents or subsequent births- for couples who’ve had a challenging birth experience and would like their next birth experience to be different.

So, if you're 24 weeks pregnant or more and looking for independent, evidence based childbirth education, come and join me on April 6 and 13.

How lucky am I to share Calmbirth and support couples with their transformation into becoming parents💫

If you're pregnant or know anyone expecting a baby, I highly recommend attending an independent childbirth education program with a strong evidence base... such as Calmbirth!

Is it enough to simply learn about birth physiology🤔

Not really... Having an understanding of the mind-body connection, learning breathwork techniques, and how to utilise your natural relaxation response will enable you to retrain your response to stress.

This isn't just for birth! Calmbirth will help you feel more confident and positive in other daily events, especially heading into your parenting journey.

Navigating the possibilities of birth is also a huge part of birth preparation, and being savvy about decision making and how to approach care provider discussions when "plan A" might need to change.

Your partner has such a huge role to play, so come along to Calmbirth and learn all of the tools together to prepare and feel confident about birth.

Look out for more dates to come heading into the end of the year as I get back into the swing of things 🤭

"Why do you need a day to celebrate?"

The question my hubby asked me today when I talked about International Day of the Midwife...
"Why can't you just celebrate every day? Why do you need a day?" ...he said, and it got me thinking...

It's probably because we don't feel enough respect from the government and institutions with our poor pay, poor conditions, and unsafe patient ratios... leaving us feeling far from celebratory.

It's probably because when the clinical space becomes risky, you can often not feel supported and far from feeling that anyone is celebrating us or the women we are trying to hold space for.

Yes, the love and thanks from women, families, and colleagues is beautiful and heartwarming.

But it's not enough.

Midwives are crying at work and burning out because they want to give better care and can't within the system.

So, absolutely, I acknowledge and am thankful every day, but especially today...
May 5th...
To the amazing, talented, and caring midwifery colleagues that I have been so lucky to work with, past and my present team of incredibly hard working and talented, supportive midwives❤️

I celebrate and thank the extra special midwives who carried me through my own journeys as a mother.

So Happy International Day of the Midwife, and let's keep working towards feeling truly respected and celebrated EVERY day 💖

💔 TFMR Awareness Day May 4th, 2024

TFMR (Termination for Medical Reasons) is clouded with such stigma and judgement.
I know this first hand, when on June 13th, in 2019, the joy of our second pregnancy was torn to shreds during our fetal anomaly scan.

There are so many layers to losing a baby after TFMR, and your pathway of grief is unique.
You don't have to apologise to anyone how you navigate it all to survive.
Loved ones you thought would respect and support you, can't handle your need for privacy, or simply drift off into oblivion.

It can take what seems like forever to find some new version of 'normal' that feels ok... and that's OK!

The TFMR SUPPORT ASSOCIATION has been formed to create a credible network of TFMR specific, affirmative, and safe organisations, charities, and support spaces that are safe for the TFMR community.

So make sure you reach out for the support that you need.
You're not alone even though it can feel like you're completely alone.

Are you thinking about birth preparation?
Do you want to feel confident, positive, and in tune with your body, partner, and baby?

Calmbirth® is an independent childbirth education program that provides you with unbiased evidence-based information so you can confidently navigate the system and make the best decisions for your birth.
Having knowledge and practical tools for birth enables you and your partner to feel connected and confident, strengthening the trust in each other and birth.

The couples that have the most positive birth experience aren't lucky...
They are well prepared with a sound understanding of how the mind-body connection flows, allowing a physiological birth to happen effortlessly.

If you're 24 weeks or more, expecting your first baby or want to feel more confident heading into a second or subsequent birth, then I'd love to share Calmbirth® with you and your partner.

Check out dates for May and June Courses - link in bio. July and August dates TBA soon ❤️

Welcome to Calmbirth with Natalie

I am a Registered Midwife (RM), Child and Family Health Nurse, and Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and have worked with women and their families for 16 years.

My partner and I attended Calmbirth® prior to the birth of our baby, and despite already being a midwife, I found it a valuable learning experience. The Calmbirth® knowledge and skills, in particular learning how the mind-body connection affects birth, increased my trust in my body, and enhanced my partner’s ability to support me throughout labour and birth. Welcoming our child into the world was such a calm and joyful adventure, and it is my wish that every couple could experience this kind of empowering birth.

My personal experience with Calmbirth®, and the passion I have for guiding couples through pregnancy, birth and into the early years of parenthood, are the reasons why I became a Calmbirth® Educator. I believe that how you and your partner prepare for the birth of your baby is the most important factor in creating a positive birth experience, and a smooth transition into becoming a family.

Whilst fear is an understandable emotion surrounding pregnancy and childbirth, Calmbirth® can ease your anxiety by helping you to understand how the normal birth process can be supported, how to maximise and feel confident in your body’s abilities, and how to have a positive birth, no matter how your journey unfolds. The skills that you and your partner will learn from Calmbirth® are not just for labour and birth, but they are skills for life s.
