Motivation plays a vital role in a child’s development as it enables them to persevere through challenges, foster strong and flexible critical thinking skills and allows them to engage more deeply in learning. It is important for children and adolescents to show determination and persistence in learning new skills even when faced with setbacks. This helps to build their self-esteem and confidence, along with receiving positive reinforcement for their efforts and achievements.
Motivation can be separated into two categories:
⭐Intrinsic motivation: This refers to an internal sense of reward one receives when they perform an activity or task. This includes personal satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment or pleasure. The enjoyment of the task helps to foster curiosity, creativity and a genuine interest in or love of learning.
⭐Extrinsic motivation: This refers to external factors that impact a person’s willingness to work towards an outcome or avoid a punishment. Examples include material rewards or prizes, receiving recognition or praise, or working to achieve a promotion or good outcome e.g. high grade on a test.
