Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a large, complex group of manufactured chemicals that are ingredients in various everyday products. For example, they are used to keep food from sticking to packaging or cookware, make clothes and carpets resistant to stains, and create firefighting foam that is more effective. PFAS are used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and electronics.
These chemicals are leached into our water, soil and air and do not degrade easily (if at all) in our environment. We come into contact with these chemicals through the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Because they are so widespread, and have been found in our blood and urine in studies, there is concern that they may have a bioaccumulative effect - we are absorbing more than we can detoxify and eliminate (I know, fu***ng depressing).
What effects do they have?
Itâs hard to say because there are literally 1000âs of variations in PFAS chemicals! And research needs to be independent and needs funding, soâŚâŚ
However, research that has been done has revealed possible links to adverse health outcomes such as altered metabolism, reduced fertility, reduced foetal growth, increased risk of obesity, and a reduced ability of the immune system to fight infections.
Hmmmm, no thanks!!
How do you avoid them?
In short, I donât think you can without living in a bubble, which would probably be made of plastic so youâd be exposing yourself to more chemical s**t. ButâŚ.
Make sure you are detoxing properly!! You need to be well hydrated and peeing, sweating and pooping! Your liver needs to be working well. Choose cleaning products (bicarb and vinegar are your friends),cosmetics and skin care that are as natural as possible. Get rid of your Teflon cookware - swap to glass, cast iron or stainless steel. Donât buy waterproof clothing or limit your exposure to it. Donât use stain protectors. Buy natural tooth floss (yep, some brands coat theirs with PFAS).
