When did interdisciplinary Positive Behaviour Support become “optional”?

Too often, funding structures shape practice more than best evidence does. We see professionals working in parallel but not always in true integration.

And here’s the uncomfortable question:

Are we overestimating participant understanding?

We routinely assume comprehension. Yet many participants rely heavily on contextual and social cues to navigate conversations. Without formal comprehension assessment, are we truly upholding informed consent and autonomy?

Speech Pathology reminds us how complex this is, from pragmatics to swallowing risk, food grabbing behaviours, cross-cultural communication, and dignity of risk at mealtimes.

This isn’t about professional territory.
It’s about safety. Ethics. Quality.

Interdisciplinary PBS shouldn’t depend on funding silos.
It should be the baseline.
