As of 1 January this year, the release of balloons is illegal in New South Wales. This change, introduced through the Protection of the Environment Operations Amendment (Balloons) Bill 2024, aims to protect our environment, wildlife, and waterways, a small but important step in caring for the world our loved ones leave behind.

At Kenneally’s Funerals, we understand that for many families, balloon releases have been a meaningful way to express love, remembrance, and letting go. While this change may feel like the end of a familiar tradition, there are many other beautiful and heartfelt ways to honour someone’s memory, each just as symbolic and personal.

Here are some thoughtful alternatives:

• Plant a native tree or flowering shrub in a place that holds meaning , a living tribute that grows with time.
• Write messages or memories on biodegradable paper and place them in a memory box or beneath the tree.
• Create a candlelight or lantern moment at home or by the graveside, bringing family together in quiet reflection.
• Scatter flower petals, leaves, or native seeds, gentle, natural gestures that symbolise release and renewal.
• Host a small gathering, share stories, and celebrate your loved one through music, photos, and connection.

These moments remind us that remembrance doesn’t need to reach the sky, it can bloom right here, in the hearts and hands of those who carry on the love.

Today, Erin was honoured to attend the beautiful Lipstick Luncheon in support of Mater Dei đź’•

Mater Dei makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays through specialised education, therapy, care, and family support services. The opportunities, encouragement, and support they provide for both students and their families is truly something special, and the impact they have within our community is incredible.

It was such a lovely afternoon filled with positivity and community spirit, hearing from one of the Mater Dei families and learning more about their journey. We were also lucky enough to enjoy performances from some very talented students, who absolutely lit up the room with their confidence, joy, and enthusiasm.

A big thank you to Vayshali and the Marsdens team Marsdens Law Group for the kind invitation!
