Thyroid cancer can develop quietly, often without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Thatโs what makes awareness so important.
May is Thyroid Awareness Month, led by the Australian Thyroid Foundation, a time to shine a light on a disease that is often overlooked and support earlier recognition of symptoms.
The thyroid is a small gland at the base of the neck, but it plays a big role in regulating heart rate, body temperature and weight. When cancer develops here, it may not cause obvious changes until it begins to grow.
In 2025, Cancer Australia estimated that 4,355 Australians would be diagnosed with thyroid cancer, with a 1 in 78 lifetime risk by age 85.
So, what should you look out for? A lump or swelling in the neck, changes in the voice such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation of tightness in the neck. Some people may also notice swollen lymph nodes or ongoing pain in the neck or throat.
These symptoms donโt always mean cancer, but they are worth checking. If something doesnโt feel right, a conversation with a doctor can make all the difference.
