Dr Carolyn Ee

I am a GP based in Sydney with special interests in integrative medicine especially in the areas of cancer survivorship and women’s health. I am also passionate about healthy eating and exercise, and am a keen runner. I am a mother to two young children, and the Jacka Foundation Senior Research Fellow at NICM Health Research Institute, Western Sydney University. I have trained extensively in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Acupuncture. My training included a Bachelor degree at RMIT, an internship in China, and a Graduate Certificate in Medical Acupuncture from Monash University. I completed a Masters of Medicine in 2009 and completed in a PhD in 2016 at the University of Melbourne. I have been the Chair of the Royal Australian College of GPs’ Integrative Medicine Specific Interest Network since 2017. Currently I hold a number of different leadership roles including Scientific Committee Member and Survivorship Research Co-Lead, Primary Care Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Group; Council member, Clinical Oncology Society of Australia; Primary Healthcare Framework Advisory Commitee Member, Cancer Institute NSW; and Deputy chair, RACGP Specific Interests Council. I have also previously served as a Working Group Member on the Blood Cancer Taskforce on Optimal Care Pathways in blood cancer. In 2022 I have shifted my clinical practice to specialising in supportive care for people with cancer. I am a Supportive Care and Integrative Oncology GP at the Living Room, Chris O’ Brien Lifehouse, where I work with an amazing multidisciplinary team of therapists all dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer and their carers. I am continuously learning about and expanding my knowledge on wellbeing practices. My favourite wellbeing practices are self compassion, gratitude, exercise, sleep, yoga, connection with nature and with loved ones, living according to my values and purpose, humour, and cultivating joy, optimism and hope. I hope my journey to discover the ways I can show up as the best version of myself will also help you in some way :)

Beautiful thought for the day.
“It takes courage to then toward ourselves with compassion and tenderly hold both our fear and joy”.

Even after meditating for fifty years, I’ve found that troublesome emotional issues don’t just disappear, but rather I have an opportunity to relate differently to everything I’m going through. A friend sent me a mug emblazoned with a phrase I use often: “We feel what we feel.” The reason I say that a lot is because it’s been an important lesson for me. I’ve seen we have to allow the dignity of every feeling, without blaming ourselves or trying to push away anything. But we also don’t need to take every feeling to heart, identifying with it, and imagining it is all we will ever feel. We can be with painful feelings differently, with compassion for ourselves instead of judgment. We can practice to not forget or overlook the joy and goodness that are also there. The wisdom of equanimity reminds us that we don’t have to get over how we’re feeling. It takes courage to turn toward ourselves with compassion and tenderly hold both our fear and joy. Somehow, we have space for both to be true because they both are true.

I know this isn’t for everyone (it sure is one of mine…) so feel free to share your best medicine!
