Established in March 1970 and named after the late Dr. John James, a highly respected Canberra medical practitioner and surgeon. In 2006 the hospital became part of the Calvary group, founded by the Sisters of Little Company of Mary. Calvary John James Hospital is a Catholic not-for-profit organisation, investing its returns to improve and develop facilities, staff and services for the continuing

benefit of the community. Calvary John James Hospital provides surgical and medical services and a special care nursery. We are the only private maternity unit in Canberra and have the only purpose built private rehabilitation unit in the ACT. Founded in 1885 by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary is a charitable, not-for-profit, Catholic health care organisation. Our mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care to the most vulnerable, including those reaching the end of their life. With over 18,000 staff and volunteers, we have a national network of 14 Public and Private Hospitals, 72 Residential Care and Retirement Communities and 19 Community Care service centres.

Cheers to a Remarkable Journey Happy Retirement, Gary! 🌟

After more than 20 incredible years of dedicated service, our beloved Facility Manager Gary Craigie is hanging up his toolkit and stepping into a well earned retirement. 🛠️💙

Gary, you’ve been the heart behind the scenes the one who kept things running, always with a calm presence, tireless work ethic, and genuine care for everyone at CJJH. Your impact reaches far beyond the walls you maintained you’ve built trust, friendship, and a legacy we’ll never forget.

To mark this special moment, we held a lovely shared lunch in Gary’s honour. Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate, and a big shoutout to our incredible Hospitality Services Team for organising the delicious spread. 🎉

As we say goodbye to a true legend, we’re also excited to welcome Peter Chadwick as our new Facility Manager. With his experience and passion, we know Peter will carry the torch with pride and continue the high standard Gary has set. 💪

Wishing you all the very best in this next chapter, Gary. Enjoy every moment of your retirement. You will be deeply missed but your legacy will always be a part of CJJH. 💐

What’s the most rewarding part of your work?

"Knowing that I’ve made a tangible difference in someone’s life. Whether it's solving a complex problem, supporting someone through a tough moment, or helping a team achieve a shared goal it's incredibly fulfilling to see the positive impact of what I do."

If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be?

Dr. Carter would pull up a chair for Gene Wolfe (the master storyteller), Ada Lovelace (the original tech genius), and Lhasa de Sela (the hauntingly beautiful voice behind the music).

What’s a food you absolutely won’t eat?

Asparagus. No negotiation. Not even if it’s wrapped in prosciutto.

✨ Staff Spotlight: Sonam & Anyela from the CSSD Team! ✨

Q: What’s one thing most people don’t realise about working in CSSD?

Sonam: People don’t realise how fast paced and time sensitive CSSD is. We have to make sure instruments are cleaned, sterilised, and ready on time for surgeries no room for delays! It’s a big responsibility but so rewarding knowing we’re part of patient care behind the scenes.

Anyela: It’s actually pretty physical! Lots of bending, lifting, and repetitive motions, often while wearing full PPE in hot conditions. Tough work, but keeping patients safe makes it all worth it.

Q: What’s one thing you always treat yourself to on payday?

Sonam: A refreshing boba tea the perfect little reward after a busy week!

Anyela: Sometimes takeaway from Au Lac their vegan laksa is my absolute fave! Yummy and good for the tummy.

Meet the Team: CJJH Supply Squad
Masters of the Medical Stockpile!

Ever wonder how the right gear always magically appears just when you need it? Spoiler alert: it’s not magic it’s Spencer, Nuru, Ben, Eliza, Dale, and Megan the unstoppable CJJH Supply Team!

This legendary crew works behind the scenes faster than a coffee van on night shift. Need gloves? They’ve got 400 boxes. Out of hand sanitiser? Not on their watch. Can’t find a single pen? Okay, fair… they’re not miracle workers.

From sutures to bandages and every mystery medical item in between, they keep the hospital ticking like a well oiled barcode scanner. You might not always see them, but trust us they see everything. Especially when you’re hoarding extra syringes “just in case.”

With expert level organisation skills, forklift finesse, and an uncanny ability to find “that one thing from that one supplier”, these supply legends are the silent heroes of the hospital halls.

So next time your cupboard’s magically stocked give a little nod of appreciation to the real MVPs behind it all. 🙌

We’re so proud to celebrate Rebecca Butler, who has recently stepped into the role of Acting Director of Clinical Services here at Calvary John James Hospital.

Rebecca’s journey is one marked by compassion, commitment, and quiet leadership. Before joining us, she spent 10 years nursing in the UK, specialising in ENT and Maxillofacial care experiences that shaped her deep clinical knowledge and kind, calm approach.

Since walking through the doors of CJJH 14 years ago, Rebecca has made a lasting impact at every step from Curtin Ward to clinical education, to becoming a NUM, then Shift Coordinator, and even leading national projects that have improved care across the board. For the past three years, she has been a steady, trusted presence as our Clinical Services Coordinator.

Now, as she steps into the Acting DCS role, she brings not only a wealth of experience, but also a genuine heart for people staff and patients alike. She leads by lifting others, quietly making things better, and never seeking the spotlight.

Rebecca, we see you, we appreciate you, and we’re so lucky to have you guiding us. 💙
