It begins with becoming safely embodied.

To heal those parts of us that carry trauma we first need to create a safe space for them. A space within our body and emotions and also in our environment and close relationships. We need to slow things down to listen and become aware of what they need to feel safe, secure and supported. Then we can start to repair and heal the wounds and the ways our brain and nervous system have been affected.

Trauma neuroscience research shows that trauma becomes part of our identity, our emotions and body awareness. It lives in the limbic and nervous system, our body. So that's where we begin.

Our Level Two Awaken course follows these principles. We believe that the body points the way towards healing, because that's it's nature, moving forward towards balance.

If you didn't have the chance to join Level One Awaken, we now have a pre-recorded course to catch you up so you can join Level Two Awaken. It's not too late to join.

Level Two live online course begins 23rd July 5-7pm PST

In our Level One AWAKEN course we covered topics and somatic practices to work and heal your nervous system and brain, founded upon the current clinical studies from trauma research, polyvagal theory and neuroscience. This provided you with the tools to confidently begin your healing journey in the right direction.

In Level Two AWAKEN we will continue to deepen and apply these tools through somatic techniques from Internal Family Systems, Focusing Oriented Therapy and Somatic Neurobiology within the contexts of Self led healing and relationships.

No two experiences of loss will be exactly the same and each grief seems to have its own trajectory and timeline. No one can tell us how we should or shouldn't grieve, though many will offer well-meaning advice. Grieving may be a natural response to our losses but it may also be one of the hardest things we ever do. We may feel we are absent from parts of our lives, or that we are feeling too much, we may fear the pain. There is hope though. Learning and incorporating somatic practices, being around people who have been through something similar, feeling supported - all these can help us honor our experiences and find our way forward with more compassion and resilience.

Your body knows how to grieve and is a powerful resource that is already there for you. In our upcoming Emerge program we use body based approaches that provide grounded support for grieving.

Some topics we will cover are:

How somatic approaches can support grieving
How grieving affects the body and brain
How to support a grieving body and mind
Grieving and physical pain
When we get stuck
Somatic emotional processing,
What part is trauma? What part is grief?,
The body as a source of resilience
The heart of grieving

We will meet once a week for six weeks in live online community, starting July 6

When I experienced the death of my close friend and mentor I found that being with others helped me the most. I found that my usual friends weren't really comfortable with my grieving. Being with others who shared my loss helped me feel supported to share the flowing organic movement of my grief. I was able to be present to others and myself.

Co-regulating with others regulates our nervous system, helping it to find balance. This balance gets lost when we've been trapped in hyper aroused or shutdown states due to stress, trauma and grief.

At Embodiment Institute creating a safe space for sharing in our somatic healing courses is so important to us because it's one of the keys to the power of healing. As a clinical social worker, group work was one of my main modalities and I have since run many groups for people with stress, trauma and grief in the healthcare system. My love of group work came from my early experiences and I have continued to run groups of many kinds for most of my career. It's my preference over one on one work because of its power to heal. It brings people together and creates life changing experiences.

In our 6 week live online Emerge course we create a supportive space for grievers and provide you with a somatic toolbox to support grieving.

Our bodies know how to grieve if we are attuned to its needs. Neuroscience shows that having resilience and a flexible mindset greatly supports grieving. This is evidenced by people being able to move through their grieving if they have good vagal tone, the ability to modulate the nervous system during times of emotional distress. Being with others who support and ground us also helps our vagal tone. Our body will tell us when we feel supported, grounded and centered, when we listen. If there is trauma, from the past or as part of the loss this can also affect our vagal tone. We can bring practices into our daily routine that support our nervous system and improve our vagal tone. The body has such a capacity to heal and can be a resource of resilience and knowledge.

Please join us for our next online Qi Gong class cycle, starting June 18, taught by Andreanna.

Qi Gong helps us move into more relaxed states and out of fight/flight and freeze, create new neural connections, and reconnect a positive feedback loop between body, feeling sense, and our inner states. The practice supports health and energetic flow, using breath, movement, and attention to nourish and restore. Through the practice of Qi Gong we care for ourselves during difficult times and find our ways of feeling more alive.

In this series we will also explore a few other gentle somatic methods during our time together, to keep adding to the resources we can draw from.

Qi Gong with Andreanna
June 18 - August 7
Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-5pm San Francisco/7pm New York
Thursdays and Fridays at 7am in Singapore/ 10am in Sydney, Australia
(For those taking Awaken Level 2 course, we will discuss potential rescheduling of the last few classes, as needed)

All are welcome - no previous experience required. Class recordings will be provided for you to practice along with for the rest of the week.

For some of us feeling whole again is a dream we've given up on. For others, it's something of a mystery. After decades of being on my own healing journey, I discovered that feeling whole again is something you develop and feel from within. It has little to do with your relationships, your success or your trauma. There's a part of us that tells us we're not like 'normal' people. We will always feel this way. Like being in a bad dream that keeps repeating. But the way to feel whole again is only hidden because we have lost our connection with ourselves. I found after trying so many things that this connection is the key. When we reconnect with ourselves with all our being we can move forward from this place. It just needs our openness and patience.

In this weekend course we will begin by cultivating a feeling sense of safety as the foundation for healing. We will explore how connection gets lost and how we can restore our sense of self again. Through your thoughts, feelings, body and mind we will support reconnecting to yourself. We will use your powerful body-mind connection to heal and restore your nervous system through somatic exercises and practices together.

This will be an integrative experience of information, discussion, reflection and movement practice. We will be guided by all the current neurobiology and neuroscience research and mind-body somatic approaches.

At the heart of healing trauma is our connection to ourselves. It is part of every step of the healing journey and it enables us to make progress.

This connection is our internal wisdom. It is our GPS. it's not that it knows the answer or direction. it simply knows what's right and wrong for us. When we follow this we move forward all together, without struggle or self doubt.

In this weekend course we will begin by cultivating a feeling sense of safety as the foundation for healing. We will explore how connection gets lost and how we can restore our sense of self again. Through your thoughts, feelings, body and mind we will support reconnecting to yourself. What is one small thing that helps you feel more at home in your body? For some of us it will be stillness, like sitting with a cup of tea. For others it might be getting out into nature. Or maybe you like dancing in the kitchen when no one else is around. The nervous system craves all of these things: space and silence. Less stimulus. But also rhythm - singing, dancing, laughing.

Each of these is actually a micro practice - they may all sound simple but each of these helps us create safety and connection.

What do you enjoy? What is helping you the most lately?

Why do I react like this? Why can't I just get over it? What's wrong with me? If these questions sound familiar, you are not alone. And more importantly, there is nothing wrong with you. Your reactions make perfect sense, even when they don't feel that way. Our trauma responses are not personal failures. Sharing because understanding this changed everything for us, and maybe it will for you too.

Understanding is the first step and change is absolutely possible. Scroll through to see how trauma effects the brain.
