What clues to look at?
Here is my opinion:
✅ Practitioner’s own results.
Be it mental resilience, good relationships, career fulfillment - people who have achieved it had to overcome own limiting circumstances and beliefs and are likely to mirror you your blind spots.
✅ Empathy, connection.
You will see that the person gets you. You feel comfortable. You receive results after each session. The best way to check that connection is by having 1 session.
❌ Degree.
Everyone has a degree and theoretical knowledge, but not everyone a master of their craft.
Also, not everyone keeps studying after having a degree, doing own therapy and supervision, achieving own goals.
❌ Price.
Good specialists can charge high or low prices. Bad professionals can do the same. Price is not a reliable indicator.
A disclaimer here: good specialists do not provide free advice and that is a rule among psychologists.
The reason for that is to avoid a common “game”. Person 1 is giving advice in hope that Person 2 gets better and by that also proves Person’s 1 worth. Person 2 opts for free help to be able to say “I have done it all”, while in fact not committing any m effort and resources to a desired change and only aggravating own state of helplessness.
