April’s been full of creativity, connection, and a lot of fun in our Groups & Classes 💛

From our women’s group making friendship bracelets, to creative class crafting paper mache swords, and stitch club sewing aprons (and even a beautiful dress as a birthday gift for Elspeth 🎂), there’s been something special happening everywhere.

Our Easter bunny heat pack stall was a huge success—raising $130! 🐰 Cooking class baked delicious hot cross buns, music class jammed out to some Elvis classics, and the men’s group brought history to life with a mock WWII tank battle.

In IT, everyone’s been building practical skills, learning mail merge and how to apply and modify styles in MS Word.

It’s been a month of learning, laughter, and community, and we can’t wait to see what next month brings!

Sounds exciting, right? Inquire about joining our community at Intake@koomarri.asn.au. See you next time!

Another great week at Men’s Group, this week we took on Scotland. Any true Scot could tell you that this Saturday is the ‘Premier’ Scottish event: the Brigadoon Highland Gathering!

We got stuck into some of the history behind the kilt (knee-length, pleated, going all the way back to 16th century Highland culture) and the sporran, worn front and centre as a pouch.

After learning about the history, we got started on some Highland Games. Plenty of attempts at the caber toss (flipping a full log end-over-end), the hammer throw, and the sheaf toss, safe to say there were a few surprise talents… and a few shockers.

Alistair kept things authentic with an Irn-Bru in hand (Scotland’s iconic soft drink), and we finished the group with trivia.

Don't miss your chance to join the fun, we have one spot left in our Tuesday Men's Group!

Another milestone to celebrate, 34 years.

Over the years, Mark has shown unwavering dedication and a strong work ethic throughout his time at Koomarri. He has worked across all Koomarri sites, spanning Belconnen, Fyshwick, and even in Garden Maintenance, always bringing consistency, reliability, and pride to everything he does.

Beyond his work, Mark is someone who brings a positive presence wherever he goes. He is thoughtful, approachable, and valued by all who have had the chance to work alongside him. The impact he has on those around him is clear, and he is truly appreciated by many. Mark shared that one of his favourite memories has been doing the mail runs, and he is also known for enjoying a well-earned beer after work.

To mark this occasion, we came together for a morning tea to celebrate Mark’s journey, sharing stories, reflecting on his time with Koomarri, and enjoying the moment as a team.

We are incredibly proud to recognise this milestone with you, Mark. Thank you for everything you have given over the past 34 years.

💵 Payroll rarely gets the recognition it deserves, but it plays one of the most important roles in any organisation.

Every pay cycle, Gracita works behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly, accurately, and on time. It’s a role that requires precision, trust, and a strong sense of responsibility, impacting every single person in the workplace.

Gracita brings a calm, reliable presence to what can often be complex and high-pressure work. Whether it’s resolving discrepancies or making sure every detail is right, she approaches it all with care and professionalism.

It’s easy to overlook payroll when everything runs well, but that consistency is exactly what makes it so valuable. Gracita, thank you for the work you do and the standard you uphold. It’s genuinely appreciated by all of us.

Outside of work, Gracita is also taking on an incredible challenge this month, completing 1,736 squats across March to represent the 56 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer every day. If you’d like to support her and the cause, we encourage you to donate or share her fundraiser, every bit helps.

We also took a moment to learn more about the work that goes into payroll and the person behind it, so we asked Gracita a few questions:

Q: What’s one myth about payroll you’d love to debunk?
A: Payroll isn't just pressing a button! There’s a significant amount work involved behind the scenes, like applying the correct award interpretation, high attention to detail and problem solving.

Q: One thing you never start your workday without?
A: A good cup of coffee, it helps me to focus and get ready for the day

Q: If you weren’t working in payroll, what would you be doing?
A: I’d likely be in accounting within the not-for-profit sector. It’s an area I’ve always been passionate about and studied, and I’d love to contribute in a way that makes a meaningful difference.

40 years. What an achievement.

Across four decades, Kenny has brought his dedication and strong work ethic to a wide range of workplaces. From his time at Pack & Post to his current roles at the Treasury and the Department of Defence — along with many other roles in between — he has consistently shown commitment, reliability, and pride in his work.

More than that, Kenny is simply a beautiful person to be around, and anyone who knows him can attest to that. He is so kind, always warm, and deeply loved by everyone who has had the pleasure of working alongside him. The joy and warmth Kenny brings is infectious; he has a way of making everyone around him feel instantly happy, appreciated, and cared for, leaving a lasting impression wherever he goes.

To celebrate this incredible milestone, we got together at Koomarri Central for a morning tea, sharing nostalgic chats and stories about the “back in the day” moments from Kenny’s career. Laughter, memories, and plenty of smiles all around.

We are so proud to celebrate this milestone with you, Kenny. Thank you for everything you bring to our community.
