To celebrate NAIDOC Week, members of our Brisbane-based team, who live and work on Turrbal land, took some time out to be educated about bush tucker by our HSE colleague and proud Ngemba man, Dean Haley.

Dean was joined by our Operations Manager Shami Rahman, who provided a crash course in animal tracking. Shami, who is non-Indigenous, learnt these techniques during his previous career in the Australian Army.

Another non-Indigenous man, Dick Copeman, who is an expert in permaculture and native plants including bush tucker plants, provided a guided tour of native plant communities at the Northey Street City Farm.

Being that today is International Paramedics Day, it is rather appropriate to announce the launch of "Through The Rubble", a book by Aspen Medical alumnus and intensive care paramedic Alan Playford.

Alan's career has seen him provide care during disasters such as the Newcastle earthquake in 1989, the Canberra bushfires in 2003, and overseas on deployed healthcare projects with Aspen Medical in Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste, amongst many more.

According to former Governor-General of Australia General David Hurley AC CVO DSC (Retd), who penned the book's foreword: "Cats would envy Alan Playford. Nine lives are not enough to cover this life that is so rich in experiences."

The memoir from Big Sky Publishing and Simon & Schuster Australia is now available from at all good bookstores across Australia and New Zealand. You can also buy online from Amazon and Booktopia and all good online retailers.

Today is International Paramedics Day! 🚑

Launched in 2022, International Paramedics Day takes place on the 8 July each year, marking the anniversary of the birth of Dominique-Jean Larrey, often referred to as the father of modern-day ambulance services.

This year's theme is "Unity & Community" - because no paramedic works alone.

A shout out to our paramedicine team the world over, who bring their A-game day in, day out, to support our clients in the remotest and most challenging locations on the planet. 🫶

Today is the start of NAIDOC week across Australia.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.

At Aspen Medical we are very lucky to have proud Yorta Yorta man Steve Jones, AM to share his wisdom and insights into First Nations culture and history.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming LifeUnleashed by Integra Service Dogs Australia to our global HQ in Canberra, and the beautiful fur babies behaved paw-fectly throughout.

LifeUnleashed is a veteran-founded charity doing life-changing work for veterans and first responders living with PTSD.

Through their expertly trained Labrador service dogs, LifeUnleashed helps restore independence, stability and purpose, reducing hospitalisation, medication reliance and social isolation. With over 130 active handler-dog teams across the country, their impact is a powerful reminder of the healing bond between humans and dogs. 💙🐶

Kelly-Ann King, a Project Manager within our Defence and National Security Division, and an Australian Army veteran, said: “I love that I get extra cuddles, because we’re a veteran family, and I have close friends who face ongoing mental health challenges. Knowing we’re making a difference and supporting the veteran community means everything to us. Our military background and deep desire to give back inspired us to get involved.”

🚨Please note: if you see a service dog in public wearing their working coat, please don’t approach or pat them, they’re on duty, supporting their handler in ways we can’t always see.

Bula!

What a BIG day in Fiji....

Lautoka Hospital $11 million (FJD) investment in state-of-the-art medical facilities, which are set to transform healthcare services across the Western Division and Fiji, was officially opened today, 2 July 2025, by Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Professor Biman Prasad.

This investment has introduced a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, an advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite, a dedicated Fast Track Unit in the Emergency Department and an Isolation Room – a crucial first of its kind in Fiji.

The Aspen Medical team, led by in-country CEO Gavin Whiteside, was also joined by Acting Australian High Commissioner Clair McNamara, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa (MP), Tui Vitogo Ratu Jone Sovasova and Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) CEO Viliame Vodonaivalu to celebrate the occasion.

Through a Public-Private Partnership with the FNPF, Aspen Medical manages the public hospitals at Ba and Lautoka, which together support more than one-third of the Fijian population.

Together with our partners, we’re helping build a more inclusive, connected and resilient Canberra. 💪

Aspen Medical Foundation is thrilled to be part of the 2025 Canberra Foundations Collaborative, contributing to a $1.94 million boost for 71 vital community projects across the Australian Capital Territory.

Led by The Snow Foundation, Hands Across Canberra and the John James Foundation, with support from Aspen Medical Foundation and Davencare Foundation, this incredible partnership, now in its fourth year, is backing initiatives in:

🩵 community connection

🩵 disability inclusion

🩵 healthcare access

🩵 family and domestic violence prevention.…and more.

We're especially proud to support Sanctuary Aus Limited, SEE-Change, Radio 1RHP and Fearless Women in 2025.

Speaking at the announcement of the 2025 funding, Aspen Medical Group CEO Craig Fitzgerald said, "What the Snow Foundation, Hands Across Canberra and John James Foundation have achieved through the Canberra Foundations Collaborative over the past four years is nothing short of remarkable.

"Aspen Medical Foundation is proud to be part of this powerful partnership and stand alongside those creating lasting impact in our community. This year, we’ve placed a strong focus on disability and health equity, and we’re honoured to support initiatives that are making a real difference in people’s lives.”

Remote area communication often relies on mobile phone coverage (where available) and satellite phones where there are black spots.

Currently, we are testing high-speed internet access platform Starlink, which has been fitted to some vehicles. This gives more reliable communications and access to telehealth which means improved access to a wider range of medical specialists for our clients' employees.

According to Celie Bright-Perry, Clinical Manager - Resource Sector: "For clinicians, having this capability ensures real time communication when managing patients in isolated environments. It allows timely consultation from senior medical consultants resulting in better patient outcomes and support to clinicians.

"It also provides clinicians uninterrupted access to clinical resources and patient records enabling continuous patient care. Finally, it ensures that clinicians have communication with site management, emergency services and coordinators in emergency situations and ensures that response efforts are streamlined.

"Ultimately, Starlink provides clinicians with reliable access to support in what can otherwise be an isolating environment to work in."
